Long living room

last modified: 25 days ago

The pics are my long, rectangular living room measuring 15x28. I am looking for new ways to redeisgn the space. In the far corner of the first picture, the piano and window will eventually be removed and replaced with our new front door (we framed in our old door to create a bedroom.)

In the second picture, the half wall is separating the dining/living from the kitchen. I thought we should remove the half wall and just have our dinign room open to the kitchen, but my husband believes this might be to open since there would be no other separations (all bedrooms open to the living/kitchen area.

The big window will also be changed out next year; possibly to two small ones and moved toward half wall (or we take out the wall).

Anyways, looking for suggestions/recommendations for window or furniture placement, storage ideas, etc (I already know the lights are hideous and are getting changed and yes, the floors are getting changed in two months). All this furniture is from when my mom lived here and can/will happily go.

I have 3 kids, so I'd like to to be a fun inviting place to sit and watch movies/play games, etc. I don't love the idea of the couch against the far wall but will if it makes the most sense.

thank you!

Edited to add floor plan that was drawn up for us-but we have changed since. the entry/porch has been framed in and is now a bedroom. The large bedroom near the kitchen has been split directly in haf to make two bedrooms. Changes are in red.

Supply us with a detailed floor plan of the room--all windows, doors, doorways measured. Also indicate where the doors and doorways lead. This will be much more help than your photos.

    The photos don't help much.

I don't see a half wall (or pony wall) in this space.

removing walls could be an issue, they may be supporting walls and removing will require a beam to carry the load of the roof/upper floors, often expensive.

Removing and replacing windows affects the exterior appearance of the home, something to consider.

While awaiting all the other changes, have you tried breaking up the room into a TV viewing area, conversation/reading, and dining?

You've pushed all your furniture up against the walls, try floating pieces and creating areas to suit. break up the sectional gather around the TV.

you already swag the light over the dining table, center it. Tall Hutch piece on the end of the room... how long is the dining table? do you need all sides?

I'd spin it the other way, even put one end up against the outside wall. a framed piece above the end.

Yvonne is correct - a scaled drawing of the room that includes all dimensions of walls/doors/windows/doorways is necessary for people to be able to provide layout suggestions. Being able to see what rooms/hallways any doors/doorways lead is also helpful (you don't need to provide a scaled drawing of all of the other rooms/spaces - just need to be able to understand the floor plan.

It would also be helpful if you add a photo of the front of your house in a comment - people need to understand how changing the windows/doors will affect the look of the front exterior elevation of your home.

Will the piano be leaving with all of the other furniture/lights/accessories in the room?

I think it would be nice if you could repurpose or upcycle/update a few items that belonged to your mom (although I'm assuming that she has passed away - maybe the most important items belonging to your mom have moved with her to a retirement apartment).

thank you everyone! Ive updated the post to include a floor plan that we had drawn up before we decided against an addition. Changes we have made are in red.

I've kept most of my moms furniture that means something to us, the piano used to be my step dads. But the hutch can go, the electric fireplace, even the dining room table. Its about five feet but can has leaves on each end to extend it.

The problem is that the extras space you have in the room is one the RH side instead of the LH side. There are some insurmountable problems with these plans. Furnishings and locations for windows and doors just don't align.

You might want to consider relocating the front door.
