advice on concrete work

last year

Had concrete poured to extend our existing driveway & extend to under our deck… now I think it looks so weird. There are several parts that slope to tie it all together. I asked my husband should they have dug down even with the driveway & made it that same level all the way across With maybe a slight grade. That way it wouldn’t be like “walking up a hill” to get to under the deck. I think we could have removed dirt to help it not look so dramatic, or am I wrong ?

Is there a drainage issue they may have been concerned with?

If you didn't discuss this with them, how would they know that is what you wanted? They poured the cement. That was their instruction I assume. They would need equipment they would not have with them and the timeline would have been off unless they were forewarned.

@arcy- I’m not saying they did anything wrong- this just isn’t what I envisioned. I thought it was going to be with a slight slope.

It's unfortunate that a computer generated proposed plan of what it would look like wasn't provided with the bid.

What was the required prep work in order for the site to be ready for the cement to be poured? I am not familiar with pouring a concrete pad = I don't know all of the required steps in the process that need to be done in order to have the ground prepped correctly prior to the pour (example - did they dig up sod + add layers of rock + sand + compact/tamp it all down prior to pouring the new extension of the driveway?)

@lisedv - so from what I’m gathering from my husband - if they would’ve “dug down” to have it even with the driveway all the way across then there would be about a 16inch drop from the grass to the concrete on one side that would required some brick or retaining wall … I was thinking it would be sloped, but I didn’t think it would be this much

If they had to start the cement at the level you have at the back of the carport and slope down towards the end of the driveway (or middle - I cannot see the entire driveway) that would have been better but not being on site I cannot understand where you would need to have a retaining wall.

It's done. Why second guess at this point as you have no legal options to pursue?

It's already like this, so don't add unnecessary troubles,

I think it is done and to redo is a huge issue so honestly how many times is this going to be an issue. Waht do yiu use that space for ? To me that concrete added to the driveway is the wrong choice it should have been done to amtch the driveway so I think now live with it unless it is an issue everyday. Do guests use this at all ?

It's easier to redo it now before the concrete has fully cured in 28 days. You can diy the breakup by renting an electric jackhammer. That's the most labor intensive part. Plus it's heavy to dispose off. A pickup would help. And you can possibly use the dirt you'll need to remove for a berm somewhere in your landscape. I never recommend leaving a mistake because it's done. But I think you should diy as much as possible to help cement the learning value of good planning.

If there is no waterproofing on the brick (apparently with 12" of soil against it, then the 4" slab), nor expansion joint, nor underground pipe for the downspout, then those are 3 additional reasons to redo and take the $8K hit.

@3onthetree - they told us we should not bury the downspout portion because it would look very odd in the concrete sticking out. The downspout is there now but could possibly be moved a lot cheaper than a 8K hit for concrete … there was no “waterproofing” the brick prior to the concrete I don’t think, as this portion wis mostly underground/at ground level- idk what “whaterproofing” looks like or what an expansion joint looks like - I wasn’t here when they laid the concrete

@ Patricia Cowell - it was added to match the driveway- but the driveway concrete is old & dirty so it doesn’t look like it “matches” until maybe I pressure wash. It is just used to be an extension of the driveway because before there was a semicircle that was cut off the driveway and it was filled with mulch. We added a covered porch - so we decided to extend the concrete so it would go under the porch & not just be mud. .. only really going to be used for storage
