front door color

last year

Ive always had a red door in my previous and when I built this 4 years ago. The house including the door is due for painting very soon. I was thinking I would do something else since 1. My neighbor decided to paint his door red 😩 and 2. I don’t mind a change. The interior of my home is SW Pure White with SW Inverness Green scattered throughout ie my island, dining room ceiling, accent walls. What would the front door look like in that same green? Would love to see it if someone can do that! TIA

Sherwin Williams has ColorSnap Visualizer online where you can uploard photos of your house and "paint" it using their colors.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the interior colors of your house. If you like green, get green! Suggestion: a much lighter color than your current red. When this picture was taken, your front door area appears very dark.

^Agree with something much lighter to help pull it out of the shadows.

Not a fan of Inverness Green.

I’d head towards a softer, lighter, more welcoming color.

The Inverness Green doesn’t look like a good choice. The colors from Maureen and Lyn look like options…or something like this (BM Wythe Blue) that’s lighter/brighter.

Love the color suggestions Lynn and Chloe have noted. They will work great with the exterior of the house.

I would go with cedar/wood color matching with posts.

Try ColorSnap online and create your own rendering, so fun! As mentioned, you can upload your photo of your porch and door. You can try many different shades instantly that way.

After going over paint colors for over a week bringing some samples and such, I have decided to stick to red but going brighter!

A light softer (mint) green would look nice. I think the earthy tones of your landscape would complement this.

Any color you want will work for your front door with white. Green is good if you like it. Is there any way to get rid of the concrete front yard? This is one reason I live in the city with most garages off the alley and no driveways in the front yard. Surely there is a better way to do it to not have a concrete front yard!

I love the dark coral still in the red family but different . I do not l think dark green would be a good choice thta door is so hidden it needs some color that shows it off a bit Some big pots of seasonal plants on either side of the door too. Then get some color into the landscapin please and some color on the entry deck furniture too.

Hi aj65, your house is beautiful and can certainly grace the cover of a magazine! You said you've always had a red front door in your previous house(s) and have decided to stick with the red, albeit a brighter hue. is this a feng shui decision? If so, you know you can also do black for a front door and have the same results. It would certainly look fabulous, and would trick the eye into thinking the doors were set further into the porch. The flattest sheen possible would be best, just enough to make it easy to wipe down when necessary, and make sure you put in an additive that protects against mold/mildew...being under a large roof, any humidity gets trapped, and it settles on every surface.

Personally, I think your front doors would look better in the same wood tone as the porch pillars. If you can paint, and if you are patient, you can do a faux finish on the doors to make them look like wood. Of course if they ARE solid wood, I'd sand them down to raw wood and then stain to match the pillars.

The wood color/finish is in the red family (according to feng shui) and it will help soften the bright white and the black trim. Placing two matching black planters on each side of the doors with shade-loving green trailing foliage plants will bring a more earthy element, and help tie in the wood elements in the doors.

If you want to make painted doors look like natural wood, you can get a graining tool at Home Depot. It is a special "paintbrush" made of plastic that has a small handle, and the "brush" or head is curved with a silicone wrap that has a high relief that mimics wood grain. You place the "brush" at the top of the door that still has wet paint, and you rock it and drag it through the wet paint from top to bottom. The "brush" pulls off some of the wet paint and leaves it looking like wood grain. It takes some practice on scrap wood to get the right feel, and you might think you are starring in the movie "The Karate Kid", but it's almost Zen-like. If you go this route, definitely remove the doors and place on sawhorses--it is much easier to drag the tool on a horizontal plane than vertical.

I guess I’m a creature of habit! I went with BM Heritage Red and do not regret my decision. Thank you all for truly wonderful ideas! I did by samples of Rain, rain washed, Halcyon Green and Jade Dragon.
None of which felt right for me. Thank you again!!
