Help with kitchen remodeling design

We have a small kitchen limited by walls/window, currently has a 27"x38" central workstation. We want to fit in a half island with sitting area. We have to move dishwasher away from the sink with an 18" waste cabinet in between. Please help comment if this design (layout1) works or has issues. Layout2 will not change old kitchen design and won't have a half island with sitting area, just keep a workstation.

What is happening in the rest of the space? Can you push the peninsula out a little further so the dw is next to the sink?

What size sink are you doing? I would rework the layout ( depending on the brand of cabinets and size availabilities.

Hi @rebasheba thank you so much for the comments. Above the corner of the half island, there will be no upper cabinet per modified design. We have two concerns: 1) since the fridge is boxed by a 30" wall, it might feel that kitchen is not open and does not flow with just 50" opening between the half island and fridge. 2) The 18" waste cabinet pullout may hinder the person working by the sink or by the dishwasher. We may change this area to become an 18" blind base cabinet.

Hi @Debbi Washburn thanks for your comments. The sink size is 33". Currently next to the dishwasher is 14" away from the sliding window. We are limited to how far we can go. The other design is to knock down the 30" fridge wall and move the fridge to the side of the stove. Then add a larger 30"x60" center island. However, with the fridge next to the other wall that is separating the dining room from kitchen, the fridge door can't swing open all the way.

If you move the frig to the range wall, a 3-6" filler can be added between the frig and the dining room wall. This will give you clearance to open the frig door. It would allow more ideas if you could post a full floorplan.

A 50 walkway is wide and there is no wall above the peninsula, so I don't see how it can be not "open"

Hi, does anyone know what the minimum gap between sink and dishwasher if they are perpendicular to each other? Want to have enough room for the person working by the sink but not too far from the dishwasher. Is this design to be avoided at all costs? The reason is for fitting a peninsular. There is no room for a waste basket though. I'm thinking of adding a small pullout one under the sink instead.

Why not leave the dishwasher next to the sink, do an 18" deep blind base and have the garbage at the end of the peninsula pulling out toward the ref? And add the overhang. The top will be about 32" deep.

I like Version 2 the best.

Hi @Debbi Washburn Thanks for the suggestion. It'd be a great idea if we weren't trying to fit the faucet to the middle of a window. On the side of the sink, from the wall to left side window is 32.5", followed by 47.5" window, followed by 34.5" wall to the sliding door/window. The total 114.5" already includes the 14" next to the DW. We plan to have a 36" Lazy Susan on the left corner, a 33" sink. We can't fit a peninsula without moving the DW.

Hi @Nova Thanks for your comments. For Version 2, do you mean the original post with a 24"x48"central workstation or the version proposed by Debbi above?

Your original version 2 in your pictures. The peninsula seems tight in your version 1 and I don't like the dishwasher separate and crowding the sink when open. I like the sink next to the dishwasher but the peninsula doesn't work in the space you have. I think your version 2 is the best in your space. Maybe you could extend your island, but I am unsure what it is beyond the current island in that open area.

i would adjust things under the window..the things you can adjust are 1. sink base cab size. 2..size of sink and 3.position of sink even if faucet has to be centered[ it doesnt really]...then i'd 4. put the dishwasher to left of sink. then your nice peninsula will be better overall......in fact I'd push the fridge to the right a bit and make the peninsula at least another 6 inches long. this can work..... You havent had good seating...you can have it now and a great peninsula a little bit free'ed up ..its worth the adjustments.

1st pic ..faucet is not centered...2nd pic....pushing fridge over a bit and extending peninsula without the crowding of dishwasher there either.....much nicer....i think you'd like it..

I added the measurement of the current kitchen. There is no limit on what can be changed, including knock down the half wall on the left of the fridge and move the fridge to the stove side. Can also move the stove to the left by a foot or so to make it center of the wall with a chimney hood. We want to add is a peninsula or island with 2-3 sitting areas. It currently has a workstation that is only 25" from the fridge handle. We want to change the kitchen desk to a coffee bar (Pantry is nice but too expensive and will lose counter space).

Hi @herbflavor Thanks for your suggestions. Combining your points with @Debbi Washburn suggestions, I'm getting a much better design for the small kitchen! I think we were limited to the idea of alignment of faucet with the window. I'll start adding cabinets to the space and will keep you updated. I really like your second picture.

This is what I was suggesting

Without pictures or dimensions of the rest of the room, it is hard to give better suggestions.

In general, I do suggest avoiding diagonal wall cabinets if possible. In both the plans, there is no ref panel on the right side. You need it for the support of the deeper upper cabinet. What size sink are you actually doing?

Hi @Debbi Washburn I shared the dimensions in my last post. We can only fit a 30" sink although 33" is desired. The area next to the DW is a large sliding door to the backyard. We can't build the peninsula past the sliding door. We just have 114.5" to play with for a counter (24"), a sink (30") and a DW (24.5"), plus peninsular width.

Ok so whoever did your first layout didn't even put your space in the computer correctly.

Are you keeping the table? I wouldn't even try to get a peninsula or island with any seating. It's just too tight.

You could try the ref to the left of the stove, but the island won't be as big as you think because of the cabinet on the other side of the doorway. It would be something like this:

I don't think you are gaining too much by doing this. It looks good though.
