Sheetrock repair.

I’m having my interior walls repainted and I’m redoing the floor molding before. How do I repair the damage I did taking off the molding? And do I have it correct, trim, caulk then paint the walls last?

How tall are the new baseboards (will they be taller than the damage that was caused while removing the old baseboards)? If they will be taller, you don't need to completely fix the damage that has occurred because it will be covered by the new baseboards.

My understanding is that you install the baseboard, caulk, paint the caulk line with the wall paint. Try not to get your wall paint all over the base, especially if the colors are drastically different. Let the paint dry/cure for a day. Get yourself some delicate surface Frog Tape and tape the wall, right above the baseboard and then come back with your trim paint and brush the top of your base (this make take more than one coat depending on color differences). Frog Tape has a water activated polymer that swells when latex paint hits it and prevents tape bleed and will give you nice sharp lines.

However, I am not a professional painter - but that's how my neighbor's painting subcontractor did it when replacing their old baseboards with taller ones + paint the new trim + walls (they are renovating the entire first floor of their home - my neighbor works for a very well respected construction/renovation company and is a designer).

You can use a razor blade (single-edge, there are holders for them) to cut off the old caulk, I wouldn't think you need to do any other repair before installing the new/re-used baseboards. Just fill any remaining divots with spackle before painting.

It is unusual for guests to crawl and lie on the floor inspecting one's baseboards. It is acceptable to show those guests the door!

Did you ask your painter about their preferred order?

Who will install and paint the new base?

Oh, and if you can, pre-paint the baseboard - i.e. paint them before installing. So much easier.

I recently did this prior to getting new flooring installed. I removed all of the old baseboard trim and neatened up the wall .

I cleaned up all the debris from the wall with a scraper and a razor knife. Then I spread a skim coat of drywall compound, sanded and repainted the wall up about six inches. I wanted the new trim to go onto a refreshed wall. I am glad that I did. I had new trim put down after the floor and now it is all nice and neat.
