Need help with kitchen setup

Hi there,

I need some help with the dining nook in my kitchen, specifically, what to do with the corner by the sliding doors. I plan on keeping the table oriented the way it is as it allows more room around the ”island” for congregating. That being said, the empty space is begging for something. Especially the corner. Should I put a chair there? Any other ideas for this area?

With the windows, it would be nice to make a little sitting area - for reading/drinking coffee (wine)/knitting/whatever you like to do in your spare time.

EDIT - I was half asleep when I left my comment - I completely missed the "sliding doors" - oops! If you have curtain panels on the sliding door, you could cover the non-operational side with panels which would make it more like a wall where you would put something that infringes on the space for the non-operational door. People do this in various situations - for example, when they need a place for their bed in a bedroom.

I would put a beautiful pot and plant in that corner, right of the slider, under the painting (which should be vertical & longer rectangle!).

My large chinese fishbowl pot with live Bromeliads, in my previous house.

In the new house I put a large ZZ plant in it, because it has been harder to find nice Bromeliads since covid.

@eam44 Thank you. Here is a current floor plan of that area. That specific area is about 15 x 11.

Just to clarify, your table is in one corner and you’re wondering what to do with the corner that has the X - is that right?

This is one option. The corner cabinets i’ve seen are all symmetrical, so you would cover a few inches of the non-operational door.

Pottery Barn has modular furniture like this bar cabinet.

@eam44 That's pretty accurate, except that the current table that you drew in the blue oval needs to be rotated 90 degrees. The long end of that table runs along the windows on the right when looking at the floorplan. We are looking to get a new table, but not sure if we should keep the current orientation or not, as well as what to do in the corner with the red X. Thanks!

The other option is a buffet that sits in front of the non-operational door.

@eam44 Would that look strange to block half of the sliding door? If I orient that table the way you just drew it, there may be less of a need to fill that corner since there will be less dead space. I do however like the idea of the corner cabinet. The only downside to orienting the table in that manner is that it gives less room between the counter stools and kitchen table. That being said, we can always push the table into the corner when we are expecting a large crowd and feel that we need that space back.

The table is meant to be slightly off center (away from the door), not in the corner. That is what is throwing off the room.

Also, I would put curtains on the windows, but your pictures aren’t very good so it’s hard to tell if that is possible with the slanted ceiling.

I would consider a 48 inch round table where you have your table now. Isometimes add a 5th chair. I have one center leg

You mention a slider but the plan shows the door swinging in. Which is it? That makes a difference on putting things in front of the door. If swinging, does the door open back on intself and how often do people use it or leave it open?

I would like a big plant in that area without more info.

@RNmomof2 zone 5 It's a door that swings in. Not a sliding door. Not sure why I said that!
