Verticillium resistant small tree

Hello, I'm new to this forum so please be patient with me. I live in zone 8b, lost a Redbud to verticillium and am looking to replace it. It is an 8-foot space between a Golden Lawson (not shown on graph paper) and Mugo Pine, on SE corner of house. I had initially thought to put a Zelkova ' City Sprite' there but w an 18 foot spread it may shade conifers too much. What about 'Little Poncho' Dogwood or Chionanthus retsus 'Tokyo Tower'? Will either do well here? Is fruit of dogwood messy? Tokyo Tower grows sooo slow (even slower than Ginko!) Other options?

"Small" tree is not very descriptive. What is the maximum height and width you can accommodate? Also, your geographic location is far more helpful than hardiness zone.

IMO too many trees too close together Each tree needs it space to gorw full size and when you impede that space then you get issues , not proper air moement , too much shade and ofte so close together that when one gets an issue it spreads .

"IMO too many trees too close together "

IME, not too many at all!! If chosen carefully, you can include a surprising number of trees in a small garden. In a previous garden's small backyard, I had 15 trees as well as an 80' tall Douglas fir (as well as a large assortment of good sized shrubs) and they all thrived. Some 30 years gone, they are all still there and doing well.

Patricia Colwell, I agree, proper air and light is needed, which is why I asked for suggestions; do you have one? Tokyo Tower gets 4-6 wide. Gardengal48 , I live in Southern Oregon, which has a Mediterranean type climate and as stated, the allotted space is 8 feet between Lawson and Mugo. I nixed the Betula because of decimation by birch borers and Stewartia has invasive roots.

What do you think of Tokyo Tower with Deutzia 'Chardonnay Pearls'? I'm thinking the lime green of Deutzia would complement the darker greens, as well as pinks and purples in landscape. Your opinion? What about size, form, texture?

Can you mark on your photo where you are planning to site the tree? Is the site in the gap on the fence line on the right side of your house? Have you considered placing it in the lawn area?

I have an issue with verticillium too. @gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) gave good suggestions that have done well for me. Good watering practices are helpful too.
