Some bright spots among the many disappointments.

I thought the last few seasons weren’t good…..then this season showed up. I am guessing about 10% of my daylilies are close to giving up. The bud counts are miserable on many, some lost fans and some that had 6 or more scapes regularly have one or two with 3 or 4 buds. Those blooms are small and not photo material.

Thank goodness that my best performers over the years are doing reasonably well. A few are having a banner year. All of the daylilies I moved are doing well, hurray! Now a few good photos from the past two days.

Here is a sad example. Mysterious Eyes has been here a decade usually putting up 6 or 7 scapes with bud count of ten. This season small foliage and 1 scape with 5 buds. This is most likely the best bloom I will see.

Second bloom on Exotic Starfish, new to the garden.

Lemon Strawberry Twist started its third season, got moved and doing well. Tall and huge blooms.

Stone Palace Divine just started. Scapes match stats, bud count looks decent.

Blood Sweat and Tears second season, doing well.

Coast to Coast with 2 scapes down from 8. Bud count miserable, small blooms.

Mary Todd doing well as usual.

Ffo on Entwined in the Vine. Season 3? here, good bud count.

Clown Parade, second season, first blooms.

Flutterbye clump with decent bud count, reliable in decade it has been here.

Soco Gap is doing well.

Luscious Kiss is an example of things doing well. Best bud count ever this season.

Yes, some things have gotten very undersized after a week of extreme heat. But you haven't had the abundant moisture, as I recall. Coast to Coast may just be problematic in the North, though I see Char (VT) posting many pics. Of course, first-year plants will have limited production.

When I say I feel your frustration, I truly mean it. Although I fought the red bugs for years, last year was a heartbreak for me with only one bed of viable blooms to see. Of course that also pushed me to take more action. In your case I believe your heat and lack of rain contributed to poor performances. You do have some lovelies here-I love the color on Soco Gap and the Flutterbye clump is really pretty. That’s a great photo of EITV and wonderful clumps of Mary Todd.

I so hate that your season is not a good one. The heat and lack of rain are deadly for good seasons. Luscioua Kiss is a pretty one and Soco Gap and Flutterbye are nice as well.Entwined in the Vine take a bit t really put out but your blooms look good. You have others that look good too and I hope your season gets better than you expect.

First, it is a nice group of blooms you have. The pic of your bed of Mary Todd looks great. What is the tall daylily blooms behind and to the left of the tree?

I agree with others that excessive heat and lack of rain for deep watering can be one of any issues.. Soil nutrients and overcrowding of plantings can also be a factor. I think we've all had those less than stellar seasons so hang in there.

I'm sorry for your frustration. Was your winter colder/wetter then normal? I'm betting it's mostly weather related and if the problem daylilies can build back strength during this summer they may return to full power in a season or two......... As it is, there can be no complaints on your Mary Todd. That is such a full clump and she's one of my favorites of yours.......Luscious Kiss is a good purple color for you, and Exotic Starfish looks like a winner too. Socco Gap has really good petal structure and form. Great color too........I'd say your glass is still half full looking at these beauties......Maryl

We had no snow cover this past winter, probably didnt help. Th tall dark blooms in the Mary Todd photo is Tall Dark Stranger, I think you need it😉

Sorry for your poor season. I guess when you have no snow cover, those Southern bred daylilies don't winter well. If Exotic Starfish had that shape in everyone's garden, I'd add it. When see other photos of it, the shape is much different. Lemon Strawberry Twist also has a shape I like. Your clumps of Mary Todd are always a standout! Luscious Kiss does look to have a lot of buds.
