As most plants that have fruit, they don't grow around my area.

Pawpaws are typically small trees (often just big shrubs) that grow by suckers and form copses in wet, shady spots. There's a copse near me along a wet-weather stream area and are also quite common along the C&O canal areas along the Potomac River. You can see the elusive and super-quick zebra swallowtails among the pawpaws. Best description of the fruit is rather banana-like when properly ripe.

Apparently there is a pawpaw in Montgomery Co MD that is also purported to be the national champion, see this video: National Champion Pawpaw Tree at McCrillis Gardens

And there is this pawpaw in NC that was measured at 52" girth, 87' tall and 35' wide
