Looks like a mulberry to me.

As floral says, that is a mulberry. There are a number of different species w/some variation in their leaves (it does not look like an American red mulberry).

Looks like mullberry to me too. They grow like weeds around here. How long ago did you plant it, how big is it now? Do you remember what kind of mullberry you planted?

I just went out to look at my mulberry tree, forgetting that it's leaves have dropped off for the winter.

I don't remember any scent from the crushed leaves (I never crushed any) but I do know that their leaves when young are different to how they look when the tree is older. Maybe, also, if the branches are cut back hard, they grow the juvenile leaves, which are larger and sort of lobed.

Having said all that, I was fairly confident that the above leaves would resemble those on my tree.

My mother told me once that silkworms can be raised on violets (the annoying violets that come up everywhere when there's enough moisture) as long as they have been fed on violets from the beginning of their lives. I never did such a thing - I stuck to mulberry leaves - but it would be interesting to try it.

to Beesneeds, I've probably had it about 6 years. I got it from an online garden store here in the USA, so don't remember the cultivar. It's about 10 feet tall, maybe higher.. Anyway, I am diagnosed as diabetic. I heard that mulberry leaves hep regulate blood sugar, that's why I then remember I planted one, LOL
