How to layout this decorative tile in shower?

Main shower tile is 12x24
Decorative tile shown-
I’m hearing that Border tile is out but since my main 12x24 shower tile is very light with not much pattern- I need another tile to compliment it.

I’m thinking of laying the decorative tile in a band probably about 2/3 up from floor.
Using light gray grout to match 12x24 and bring out the curve of decorative tile.

This is my first floor bath so very visible to guests. My home style is traditional.

Should the decorative tile be inset and framed instead?

Use the decorative tile to fill the back wall and use your solid tile for the sides of the shower. SHow a photo of the actual shower and the whole bathroom for placement.

Are you planning to have a niche in the shower? Maybe inside of that if so.

Yes I will have a niche but not sure if decorative tile will show since niche will only be12x24

Don't use marble in a wet area without fully understanding the problems you will have with it.

Thank you - the shower main tile is ceramic and the decorative is recycled glass and mother of pearl.
    I appreciate

Terri - is everything staying in the same location as it is currently?

Are you purchasing new glass doors for your shower? If you use a pretty fabric curtain + liner for your shower instead of spending $$$ on a frameless glass enclosure, you could put that extra $$$ towards purchasing more of your waterjet mosaic - then you could use it on an entire wall inside your shower. Just a thought (you would add a hook on the wall window so that the shower curtain remains open when no one is using the shower = the new shower tile + waterjet mosaic will be seen by everyone who uses the bathroom.

    I

You could use the waterjet mosaic tile on your vanity wall - that way it will be seen by more people who use your bathroom.

You don't have to use it on the entire wall (unless you save money on the glass enclosure as suggested above) - you can create a "frame" to make it look intentional as to where you've installed it.

I think using it framed like in the below photo is a bit dated. I think that's why some people will not respond positively to adding one to your shower.

However, you can frame it other ways whether you decide to use it on the vanity wall or in the shower.

Here is your same tile used on the vanity wall - you could do something similar - or you could bring the tile up a bit more and then add the shelf. Adding a shelf on the vanity wall has become popular over the last few years:

Your tile is very pretty - however, if you decide to use it on the vanity wall, you wouldn't have to avoid using marble. Your tile has pencil tiles + rectangular tiles that are part of the product line. You could use those to create your frame around your tile.

Below is a frame that was made using various trim pieces. You could keep it more transitional vs traditional if you substitited other trim for the marble cap piece on the outside.

This is a frame piece that is put together by the manufacturer - and sells for about $125 per linear foot. You could make your own frame and it would cost much less than $125/linear foot).

Here is an example of a simple "frame" made out of tile and edge trim:

There are trim pieces that are made out of MOP and ones made out of glass. You could use one or both together to create a frame.

The next two examples are niches - but the same concept applies. In the niche below (which is Beth H's bathroom - a pro here on Houzz), she used two different types of Schluter trim to frame out her nice. On the edge of the back of the niche, you can see that there is a very thin brass/gold trim used - it is a Schluter piece turned in order to have the thin part face forward. If you combines a thin metal piece with either white glass or MOP edge trim, you could make a pretty frame for your tile (whether you used it in your shower or on your vanity wall).

Here is the second niche - they also used a thin gold metal between the side slabs of marble used inside the niche + a marble trim piece. While part of this frame is made from the side of the slab used on the inside of the niche, you could use two trim pieces to achieve the same type of frame. A metal piece between two MOP edge trim pieces would be very pretty. The glass edge trim pieces probably cost less - you could use the metal between a glass edge trim piece + a MOP edge trim piece. You also could have the matching glass tile cut to whatever thickness you want and use it instead of edge trim. If you use grout that matches the color of your tile pieces, you won't notice that they aren't one solid piece - but instead are 12" pieces used.

I think that updating the way you frame the waterjet mosaic will make it not appear dated in your shower + will provide a stopping place if you decide to use the waterjet above your vanity.

Yes, a border tile looks very dated, and your shower and bathroom look too small to support that large of an accent well. But if you like it - who cares? You are making this bathroom for you and your guests, not for the general public.

If I invested in special accent tile, I'd want glass doors so I could see it whenever I am in the bathroom, not just when I am showering. Plus, it sounds like you won't even get to use this shower - it's for guests.

So here’s what I’m thinking layout as shown with 2 pencil tiles so width is 1 and 1.2 and frame around with chrome Schluter. This would leave approx approximately a foot above and below so field tile and the decorative inset would be 6” below the top of shower glass? Shower door is semi frameless so all of the design should be visible
