When’s the last time you checked your soil pH?

I have naturally low pH soil, and three years ago I went all out with dolomite to bump it up to a nice, civilized 6. Fast-forward three years—after mulching with pine like there’s no tomorrow—and guess what? Under the evergreens, everything’s holding steady at 6–7. Around the roses? The pH has dropped so low I’m too embarrassed to say the number. Let’s just say my soil is officially on the acidic side of scandalous. And yes, I admit it: I didn’t check the pH for three whole years. Oops!

I checked my pH when I first moved in 3 years ago in several areas of the yard, it was a perfect 6.5. Since the plants don’t exhibit any pH related issues, I don’t feel the need to do it again.

When I lived in Texas my pH was about 8.5, I need to keep adding sulfur several times a year for it to be around 7. The tendency was always to turn back alkaline, so sulfur was a regular maintenance requirement.

My soil is acidic because my mycrophylla hydrangeas are very purple blue and my roses don’t get chlorosis. I dont check the PH. If my roses are doing well I dont worry about it.
