Kitchen table - where should it go? Please help

Hi all!

We are a little late in the day as we have already ordered the kitchen.. . I have no idea where the table should go. It is a largish rectangle piece of worktop in order to seat our family of 6.

The plan was for it be located as on the attached photos (after the kitchen design pictures).

But I am not happy because:

a) it is in the way of the walk-through from hallway to play-room (through the kitchen)

b) The area is undefined and not centered in any way, it probably cannot be solved with lighting.

c) Our ceiling and lighting is a big mess. The ceiling is covered with random support beams which lighting cannot be attached to. If we put lighting around it, as our electirican just did today, it will be in a random place and overshadowed by the bulky beams.

See attached picture of our design, and photos of the space. Please ignore the mess and the fridge and freezer dumped in the middle of the kitchen.

Many thanks in advance - I am so stressed about this! Sucha big space, there must be somewhere for it to go and look normal, too.

It's hard for me to understand what I'm looking at in the pictures which is probably why Yvonne asked for a floorplan. If you've already ordered the table, or know which size you'll be getting, let us know. But you can put a chandelier over the table that would hang down under the beam. Since the beams are awkwardly placed, just paint them the ceiling color and try to ignore them.

Please post a floor plan of the kitchen with all dimensions, windows, doors, and other openings labelled. Also indicate which rooms butt up to the various sides of the kitchen.

It seems like space-wise, the table could best go in the middle, between the two sides (is it a kosher kitchen?) but that doesn’t seem like good feng shui, under a beam and across from the wall of refrigerators. Can you drop the ceiling in that center to the same as the beam, to define it as a cozy spot? How high is the ceiling?

Hi thanks all for your replies, I will need to measure to provide a floor-plan and height of ceiling, hopefully later on today. We cannot add any lighting to the beams, the electrician said it is not possible..

After going to the expense of a new kitchen, I think it would be a shame to use that table as the kitchen needs something modern. Suggest selling on Marketplace and take advantage of the wall, which will free up middle/improve flow. It and a pendant (on a dimmer) will have a lot of impact and measure what length is possible, especially if you‘d like chairs on the end.

Hi, we are not planning to use that old table - it is actually borrowed! We have ordered an extra piece of finished worktop to have a matching light grey table..

Maureen, that table set looks lovely. Regarding pendant lighting, we can't have anything attached to the beam. The electircian has put in wiring on either side of the beam but I don't like the idea of two pendants, I think it could look like a pair of earrings...! Though we can only work with what we have, unfortunately

Does the length from entrance to beam allow for your table/a pendant to be centered, as that's what I was suggesting.

If not feasible, place table on wall where it works and consider sconses if you want low lighting. (A built in bench will be the most cost effective.)

Providing a picture of your table (chairs chosen?) and dimensions would help.
