Anywhere I seen it it was in a bit of indirect light but out of full sun. It is blue hosta and I think it melts more that way. Although if you need to bulk it up you can do more sun for couple of years. That is how they do them in a field.

I had mine in a location where a tree fell down and it received afternoon sun. It was one of the hostas which burnt badly and I moved. I would pick a spot with shade or maybe a little morning sun.

Mine is in a bed that is partially shaded by my house but does get sun in the early afternoon.

It has done well and the leaves don't burn.

In Wisconsin I think you could probably pull it off. It may take a year to acclimate.

The further south you go the higher the angle of incidence of the sun and the quicker you and your plants can get sunburn. While I can get away with 'Guardian Angel' in pretty much full sun where I am just north of the 49th parallel, in SE WI you're closer to the 42nd parallel and you'll get sunburn quicker. The first few years I had my GA it was in full sun from around 11AM to around 4PM and it did just fine at my latitude!
