Only two Julias are doing this. Should they be cut back to join their ’siblings’.

And, re cutting back…if I want roses in mid/late August, must I remove the heavy growth of buds from my other roses right now?

Your bush is building its structure. That cane with the blooms on it, when finished blooming and dead headed will produce nice laterals which should have nice, just opening blooms 45+-days after you make the deadhead cut. That would be about Sept. 15.

If you cut that cane now, prematurely, since those unopen buds on it would most likely be finished blooming in 10 days or less, count 45+-days from now to have open flowers on the new lateral(s) made. That would be on about Sept. 5.

At the same time though, since the present cane there has not reached full energy as it would have if allowed to let all the unopen buds there to bloom and drop their petals, if you dead head now, the dormant growth buds left below the cut that will make new laterals can be slow to grow and produce small flowers.

That's only 31 days to Aug. 21. It takes 45+-days. Also, when you force bloom a bush by cutting buds off not yet having bloomed, the stem below the cut is not as ripe as the stem would have been after the blooms currently on it flower and begin to drop their petals. Expect delays in subsequent blooming and smaller flowers if you cut buds off to try to have the bush bloom again on a special date.

Thats good info! Icebergs and the julias are both pretty steady bloomers, so I’ll leave them be. I was planning to give them a sprinkle of rose fertilizer soonish. Then just cross my fingers. Thank you agdin. Good go know about the consequences of debudding, and 45 day rule. You’re da best!

You may want to liquid feed with a formula for acid loving plants to head off any chlorotic growth which can occur with lighter colored bloomers, and when growing aggressively. Miracle-Gro makes a powdered formula for acid loving plants, formerly called Miracid. The chelated iron in it does the trick to give rich, dark green foliage which otherwise may tend to be paler green when forced to grow aggressively.

I’m a bit blown away by your help, tho I’ve often experienced the “kindness/generosity of strangers” on many forums here. Last question: should I feed with the acid while also feeding Miracle Grow for blooms?
