Aren't you the Rosarian who grows those beautiful Earth Angels? Can you please post a photo of them blooming at their best, and put it on this post. We have a fellow member, Dianela, who has planted a massive bed of Earth Angels, and I would like her to see yours to give her encouragement about how nicely they can grow and bloom.

Your Juliet is too beautiful to be real! Congratulations to you for growing Juliet to such perfection.

    Moses.

Wow!!! Such a glorious and healthy rose bush!! The blooms are heavenly!!

Hi Moses - yes that's me. I have 10 earth angels planted along my walkway. Unfortunately this years weather has not been kind to them. Here in Ohio it's been scorchingly hot and humid along with tons of rain. A lot of my roses have not done well. Blackspot and small blooms. Not to mention all the new companion plants I've lost from all the rain. Ugh.

I also pruned them back harder this year than in my previous years so I didn't get quite the show this spring. The good news is their growing pretty well now and actually setting up a second flush. Normally I would get one big flush in the spring then just sporadic blooms the rest of the year and long canes I would cut off.

I will dig around and post my pics from last year.

Thanks for the comments about Juliet. One of the few roses that have really performed this year. Juliet and Thierry marx which are both second year roses from Etsy. They're both in pots so I've been able to control their watering pretty well.

Wow! You're in Ohio, and despite our terrible weather this season, you're able to keep your roses in such perfect condition?! Your Juliet is amazing, and those Earth Angels are so beautifully bushy! My Thierry Marx is also doing very well, but my Juliet is still tiny in her second year — I’m honestly losing hope for her.

Is there anywhere online where I can learn more about your rose garden practices? If not, would you be willing to share some of your secrets?

Mx, wow! what a show stopping hedge! Your entire yard is really special!

Wow ok this is what I want mine to look like. Chino if you dont mind would you please share how hard and how often do you prune your earth angels?

Both of your Etsy roses are spectacular, do you have to spray them? I know Ohio has lots of blackspot presure so whatever does well for you has good potential here.

    Thank you, Chino.

    Chino,

Do you put yout Theirry Marx & Juliet in garage for winter? That may be reason they are so big-they don’t need weather the freezing winter. Do you spray for insects & fungus?

Dianela - I pruned them a little to hard this year. The picture I posted is from last year where I pruned them down to about 18 inches. This year I pruned them down to maybe a foot and I didn't get nearly as many blooms in the spring flush. I also had smaller blooms. Maybe next year I'll split the difference. Earth angel wants to grow tall and I want to keep them around 3-4 ft. After the first flush it wants to shoot out octopus canes so as soon as I see them I snip them off at the height of the rest of bush or a little lower. This seems to make them bud up more for the next flush as it's not using all its energy to grow long canes. It does seem to be doing better now. In previous years I would get one huge spring flush then sporadic little flushes the rest of the year. This year I have a lot more buds more in line with a second flush with bigger blooms.

Juliet and Thierry marx are both very healthy. I do spray them every now then but even when I don't they haven't gotten blackspot. Now my other wedding roses aren't doing nearly as well Juliet. They're in the ground though and I lost one of my effies.

Elena - you're Thierry marx looks great! It's a fantastic rose. Has your weather been super hot? Just asking because yours is a little lighter than mine. Mine has been almost blood red in the center and it's just breath taking.

Kitty - yes after a few days of sub freezing I'll put them in the garage. I stupidly pruned them in the spring after bringing them back outside so they great a little bit before the first flush. They both had a few blooms then had a huge growth spurt and an amazing second flush. I actually have another Juliet in the ground that I didn't think was going to make it last year. So I just stuck it in the ground. It isn't doing nearly as well. Still has one cane that it's been growing off of and blooming but it hasn't grown any new canes.

ElenaZ - thanks! Keep in mind I'm only showing all the stuff that looks good. Not the stuff that doesn't! I'm no expert Lol. Pruning is the key with earth angel otherwise it just gets out of control and messy. Cut the basal shoots as soon as you see them or you'll have 9 ft tall canes with no buds on top. Lots of fish fertilizer and rose tone.

Everyone else. Thank you for all the kind comments. I

I'll try and post some more pictures of my other austin wedding roses since there seems be some interest. These are in the ground are all doing ok. There is some winners and some losers of the bunch. I only started gardening during COVID as it gave me something to do and fell for the David Austin hype train. I bought maybe 30 or so Austin's and planted them in a new bed. I'm slowly replacing quite a few of them as there just not very good. I'm shovel pruning 3 lady of shallots hopefully next week with their replacements sitting on my front porch. I'm finding I quite enjoy hybrid teas roses more and a lot of them still have that English rose form.

Mx - yes, we all go through periods where we change our rose focus. We're learning and adapting. I'm still doing that, all the time. :)

Elena - wow!! I adore your Thierry Marx!!

Kitty, Theirry Marx is not surprising me, mine is also doing very well, has the same shape, very healthy and prolific. But Juliet is just breathtaking!

@Mx Chino, Beautiful roses! Kudos on your Juliet especially! I’ve been growing one from a rooted plant and found it’s rather slower-growing. I’ve also been trying various supplememts to keep the color from fading. Do you find this an issue with your growing conditions? The flowers are also super long-lasting; I just hope the stems will get longer as the plant gets bigger.

@elenazone6, great growing! I like the structure of Thierry Marx, but havent been able to interpret its color from posts. Can you comment on whether it’s dusky in tone?

@jjkOC zone 10a/22, SoCal, yes with the cool weather Theirry Marx is producing darker blooms.

    Mmmmm :) :)

@elenazone6, Thank you for the close-up! Its seems like the flower stays rather tight sort of like Yolande d’Aragon. Does Thierry Marx‘s flower shatter, or is it long lived?

  • last year

@jjkOC zone 10a/22, SoCal, I would say that Thierry Marx holds its blooms for about a week.

Very healthy rose! My top 5 so far out of 100+.

    @elenazone6

Lovely Thierry Marx! I must order another TM! She’s gorgeous! Do you have ohotos of your Juliet? She’s an amazing rose!

    @Mx Chino

Beautiful Thierry Marx! Mine was only rose I lost from winter damage-had a shady sunny spot. -she did well last year. After seeing your photos, I’ll order another Thierry Marx. Next time-a more sunny spot for her. I can see putting the new baby roses in pots in the garage for winter is excellent to save them.

For Juliet, try Alaska Fish fertilizer mixed with Alaska Mornloom (right mix of NPK balaced)Feed rose 3-4 weeks in a row and a heap of Plant Tone. It will boast her growth. Afterwards, fertilize once a month.

I didn’t winter protect enough my new baby Juliet from last winter & only 4 inches were left in spring. . I used my fish fertilizer mixtures & Espoma Plant Tone on her & she had ”first leaves grow ,” of my 90 roses, WOW WOW! Then she had several great thick canes grow and is 3 ft with 2nd flush just ended now. She grew very vigorously with my fertilizer mixture methods.

I have Princess Kishi, same winter damage-used my fertilizer mixtures to revive her-she is 2ft now, vigorous, dark leaves, bloomed all the time all season so far. She’s supposed to be a smaller bush, but super healthy!

I have revived several roses in last few years doing this fertilizer mixture method-roses that sat & would not revive for months, after my fertilizer mixture methods-in a month-huge wonderful growth & completely thriving!
