Did you have some standing water that killed the grass? I find the UMaine extension service to be quite good. They're probably better than crowd sourcing. Although I hate the stuff -- it escaped from an herb garden --- a significant part of my front lawn is creeping thyme. It's evergreen, mows into a walkable carpet, and doesn't need watering.

You should wait for the results of your soil test, because after all the rain we've had, you should have a lush crop of weeds, rather than bare soil. If crabgrass isn't growing, there's something wrong.

I'm not from Maine, but the soil looks very compacted...needs lots of aeration . Rent an aerator and leave the plugs on the lawn.

Then you add aa layer of composted soil and reseed

If you have been watering and fertilizing properly I'm not sure why this happened.

If you reseed, don't mow too soon, wait till the grass is very lush and thick to give time for the root thatch to establilsh.

Don't mow too short and always leave the clippings to mulch naturally back in.

Don't water in full sun, it can burn the lawn.

I forgot to mentione dethatching. I also read that if the soil is too acidic apread lime or use seed with lime so the nitrogen in fertilizer in available for the grass. Test the soil ph.

Use the proper grass variety for the sun. I also read mow the fall leaves rather than raking...adds mulch.

I live in CA so freeze is not a consideration in timeline for reseedeing..we can do it any time...I have no idea when to reseed in Maine lol.
