Awww come on now folks, I know y'all aren't the August quitting type ;-). We got a nice soaking 1/2 inch of rain today, the watermelon and cantaloupe vines are all mangled up and nearing their end. I'll have about 17 days to clear them out and start the fall crops. Might get another 6 loupes and 3-4 small melons. I lost 2 melons in storage (too hot for too long). Temps are expected to be in the low 80's for another week if we're lucky.

I was thinking that-Where is everyone?! Here in western Oregon we are entering our peak garden time. Granted, spring crops (mostly) are done, although my broccoli and aspabroc are still going strong. I still have lettuce with shade cloth on the south side of the row, it's probably getting close to the end though. My tomatoes are just getting started, I have bush Delicata squash forming and zucchini-of course.

Pole green beans are the star right now, well, they are actually dominating. My two Diva cucumbers are producing more than I need too.

We had .30" of rain in July and this was called a rare event, yesterday we got another .30"-heaven!

We got a nice surprise of 1.1" of rain today, too bad it was right after I watered some things, nyuk, but we needed it. Our late 10 tomato plants are looking good, most are setting tiny fruits now for hopefully a mid Sept picking up till first frost. I have removed all of the early 10 tomato plants due to them being half dead. The only tomatoes I'm getting now are from the compost pile volunteer. It looks like a wild heirloom and doing well, might save seeds from it later.

Watered the corn earlier but the extra rain won't hurt. This last plot of corn is looking better than the previous plot which was hit by the July heatwaves. The silks are their max now and I hand pollinate the ears for max coverage. This rain helped greatly with the sweet potatoes, watermelons, and cantaloupes of which I thankfully did not water before the rain.
I'll be yanking out the melon vines in 10 days to make room for the fall crops. The local nursery should have broccoli and cabbage transplants soon. I'll be planting by seed the carrots, beets, collards, and turnips during the week of the 23rd, it's a very short window for these fall crops to mature before it gets too cold.

The rain should also help plump up the pears and persimmons as they slowly ripen through Sept/Oct. The figs are mostly gone now, we picked and froze 24 dozen for a winter chore of making jam. Just fresh eating for another week or so before they're gone. Even with the squirrels and crows chowing down on the figs daily there are still too many to use. Hard to believe that August is almost half over, hope the cooler temps continue (80's).

Dug up the first sweet potatoes today, a nice harvest so far. Also harvested the last of the watermelons and the first of the pears. The late tomatoes are shaping up nicely as the peppers are still peppering along. Finally finished planting the fall crops > carrots, turnips, collards, broccoli, and cabbages. Still getting a few cukes but close to the end. Dinner is calling..........chow fer now...
