We had an awkward living room with lots of windows, doors, fireplace, etc. We got a drop-down screen and projector tv. Our screen drops down in the middle of the LR. We don't watch much TV and always in the evening, so it works for us.

You're right. Installing a TV above the fireplace isn't a good choice.
