Start looking at noctuids. I think it is too small for catocala, but without hindwing view, hard to tell.

I've only searched noctuids up to Hodges #10289 but

The Nutmeg - Hodges#10223 - Anarta trifolii

is a dead ringer and is widespread and of the correct size.

Thanks again for all of your help. You must have a much better eye than I do. I looked through 100's of pages at BugGuide and after a while they all started looking the same. As it turns out, that tan/brownish color was the key. Thanks again!

Time was saved on this end by knowing noctuid was highly likely

Then using Moth Photographer's Group where there is one image per species rather than bugguide where there are often too many images to be useful.

Then used bugguide for more range and size data.

Moth Photographer's pages have same-species links to bugguide, iNaturalist, etc.
