What would you do?

last year

Hi I'm having trouble on how to style this room, I don't know what I should hang over the console. I was thinking a wide and very tall mirror almost to the height of the pictures on the other side?

Post the photo right side up.

Not loving that console right next to the sofa. Can you show the entire room? all 4 walls, and dimensions.

    18 x 12

Unfortunately there's a need for the console

The problem is that the room is too small for a sectional sofa. The room is too crowded with furniture. I'd replace the sofa on the far wall with one chair, then place the console opposite the main sofa, with the TV over it.

To answer your question, yes, a mirror over the console should work fine. It doesn't have to be a very large mirror. Could be a vertically placed rectangular mirror, or a square, or a round.

The sectional is fine, and I assume it supplies needed seating.

    This is a good article:

I never understand why, when someone posts a question about a particular thing, people start just suggesting throwing out existing furniture that most posters aren't likely financially prepared to replace. Your sectional is large but you chose it and I would guess it suits you and your family.

If this were my room, I would probably clear off the top of the console, move one of the lamps elsewhere (or maybe both of them) and move the gallery pics over the console, centered, and lowered. Then try your larger painting where the gallery is, or look for another large piece. Or if you want a mirror, center it between the lamps, but still lower the whole gallery arrangement - it's too high. I think freedomplace's suggestion of round might look nice, but cut out some templates from paper and try different sizes and shapes. You don't want to go too small, especially with round.

But still clear off all the stuff on top of the console. I might try the floor lamp in the corner at the other end of the sectional.

I think Olychick has some great suggestions.

Can you rotate the sectional and put the console where the family photos are now? Then put the TV on the console.

Paint background wall colour , one wall of a room

    Rectangular, square, or round.

With a round mirror, if you hang it a bit higher on the wall (higher than this one for example) -

it will give the mirror more presence, even if it’s not a huge mirror.

    Vertical rectangle for height.

You can make some templates and try different shapes and sizes - cut them out from paper - to get a visual of what you might like best. I’m glad @Olychick mentioned that. Do that before you go mirror shopping.

I'm not sure why the console is required but could it be placed BEHIND the sectional to get it moved away from the back wall?

If the console houses equipment that involves the TV perhaps a ladder bookcase with storage in the base is a better shape and size for this location.

The framed art over the sectional needs to be repositioned.

I don't get the grass green rug in this room when every other selection is so great.

I don't think the art selection does much for the room so I'd change that.

If you like your art (which I assume you do, since you hung it on your walls) - for sure keep it.

Art is personal. This is not an impersonal hotel room that you are decorating, this is your home.

So feel free to ignore the art police... as well as the suggested generic art.

Your answer is the tv. It's where the TV belongs, it's what the console is wanting. The mantle and fireplace surround is super formal and foreboding. The rest of your room is more modern casual. I would consider a slimmed down fireplace.

Don't let the tv and console drive the bus......an electrician in order, even with streaming : )

    ( 10 x 14 rug, NOT green )

Is the sectional adjustable as shown above (one single-seat armless section moved from right wall to top wall)? A few thoughts in case not (in which case the console probably won't fit on the indicated wall)

The room currently seems quite serious; I'd want to lighten the mood a bit if it were mine. These edits do that with whimsical art and an asymmetrical arrangement over the console. (I used four matted prints there, but you could use a mirror instead.) Moved the console left a little for a bit of breathing space between it and the sectional, and the floor lamp to the end of the sectional.

The green rug and black-and-white drapes currently stand alone, unrelated to much else in the room. They will seem more integrated if their colors are repeated elsewhere (green here in art/plants and black-and-white graphics in pillows). Round coffee tables as Jan shows (glass for more visual openness?) would bring a welcome contrast to all the rectangles, but I didn't do that for these photos.

    A few ideas, anyway . . .

Just occurred to me that those black boxes at the ends of the sectional are probably speakers and have to stay. Sigh.

You can use something like these circles above the sofa 😊

Since the console has to stay, I agree with some of the other suggestions. For sure clear it off, use only one lamp and arrange art over it-simply has a good example. No mirror. I can't tell what is to the left of the console, but move that if possible so console can be moved a bit away from the couch. I agree with trying the floor lamp to the right of the couch. And edit the mantel-too much on it. I also wouldn't swag your drapes, that is adding to the formal look on that wall.

QUESTION before going into more details.

Would you be able to move the console like on either one of these layouts so that the TV and console would be in front of the sectional instead of along the wall next to it.

    ^^

Allllll You have to do to have this below?

Depends the configuration of the sectional, and CAN you remove a seat or two

Even use one piece as an armless chair! Slide the couch toward the fire. Move the console table, TAKE OUT the coffee table, trade for something lighter.

Get rid of the black box storage cubes if that is what they are. Move the tv: )
