Look at shoe cabinets at Wayfair, Ikea, etc. They look like console tables but have shoe storage underneath.

You need measurements and pictures of the whole area and the adjacent rooms to get any real help here. Also what styles and colts you like, and already have.

It's the FRONT door entry. No entrance from a garage? It's a four foot closet? What is the length of the wall to the left?

The first thing you do is remove the rod in the closet. Give up hangers! Forget it!. No kid will use a hanger, and nor will DH .You do a double height hook system for hoodies and parkas. Use the interior sides as well.

Then you hang a nice big mirror, add lamp, and ENFORCE the rules. Not every shoe in the home can live at the front door.: )

Kids and hubby need hooks and open storage. Simple, easy and obvious. I would go with the locker style with cubbies. Yes it will be open storage but you have to go step by step till the kids are gone and then hubby can learn to open the closet to put stuff away.

She want's a place for a purse, a drop it down, set it down. A bowl for keys, the mail..... and god knows what else, apparently for lack of a better location of come and go.

Ninety percent of all entry/tidy is enforcement, no matter the location. I've seen the best of the best customized cubby arrangements die in a huge mud entry ; heaps of coats on the floor, shoes, book bags, mail, packages to be returned, and you name it...... go to waste of effort 100% and money 100% because people are beyond l.a.z.y and children are usually slobs.

However , whatever you buy or build? The look you get depends the HABITS and the rules.

Want me to fix this for you? Stuff Left anywhere but where it belongs? Pick it up, toss it out the front door or into the garage, and when that "Owner" is looking for said item? Point. "You didn't put it where it belongs.......so I found a spot for it"

I assume this is the actual entrance the whole family uses so I agree a new set of rules enforced by you for coats, shoes etc.But we have no info from you as to your style . We need pics of the LR for instance.

We had 3 children and dogs, with a foyer you couldn’t swing a cat in. A well designed cupboard was essential (I found cubbies to be handy and rarely were shoes/boots found on the ground). For the wall, also consider your routine and age of kids makes a difference. Baskets (for scarves and gloves), bowl for keys, a lamp, mirror, drawers, closed in storage, etc. Since it’s the first thing you see as you enter, hope you can find a nice happy medium.

Shoes need ventilation, you CAN'T pile anything beyond flip flops in baskets, no matter the size. It's a pipe dream.

Nobody uses a hanger, so fix the darn closet!

No........you do NOT hang it for them, because someone did that for your own DH, and you my dear are living with the habit his mommy allowed, and the children now adopting his bad habit.

Take a page from my childhood. You left a bike in the driveway? It hung from a rafter in the garage for a week. You left a coat on the floor? Look on the GARAGE floor, and be stuck with the soiled coat......

Honestly, you get what you demand, and not one thing suggested will kill them.

Luckily your closet doors both swing open. Remove the rod. Replace with hooks on sides and back of closet. Put a shelf with dividers below for each person's shoes. Backpacks go on shelf. . Wait by the door for your kids for a week and make a game out of standing there, by the closet, until coats go on hooks, shoes go on floor, backpacks on shelf, close the closet doors.

The wall next to the closet can look something like this but wider. Find a nice piece at a thrift shop or Facebook Marketplace. Get a credenza if you want to keep gloves stored in the entryway. Add an attactive rug so the entry looks like a defined space of its own where all family members pause to take off outdoor clothes, shoes, before stepping into the rest of the house.
