Art work decision help

Im trying to decide on a picture above our fireplace. The two smaller canvas prints have a black frame and the larger canvas does not. Which of the actual puctures look better and which size? . Wall color is white dove, floors will be light oak. mantel and marble have to stay. Thank you

So you've never actually been in the woods on a foggy morning-I find that sad. Lots of beautiful days start out this way. It's usually quiet and peaceful. This is why art is a personal choice. For Chispa, those paintings brings fear, for me the paintings are peaceful and calm and beautiful. I like the one with the pinkish hues and the black frame. Again, it's a personal choice.

Both prints work with the fireplace - but without the picture on the left the one on the right is kind of dead. To much just green and off white. No contrasting colors.

If one picture, then yes - the one on the right. But ideally you want a longer and even narrower picture there. All because the ceiling above the fireplace is so low.

If you work only with existing paintings, I would try the option of placing both small paintings on the fireplace (not hanging them on the wall), overlapping them, placing the one on the right behind the one on the left. At the same time, there should be an equal free distance along the edges of the mantelpiece. Part of the right painting will not be visible, of course, but the subject of the image allows it.

Afterwards, on the left in front of the picture you can put, for example, a black candlestick with three thin white candles or do without additional decor at all. Place a large picture on another wall. If you show all the walls in the room, we will find a place for it.

None of them, as I find the paintings quite eerie and depressing. Nothing good happens in misty and foggy woods ... at least in the movies!

The choice is totally up to you.To me,art work above a fireplace is most appealing when the size is similar to the fireplace opening.
Both pictures evoke a cool contemplative soothing aspect.You may want to arrange the hanger so that you can switch the works depending on your own personal mood/feeling at the time,or whatever colors of surrounding decor you desire to echo.

simplynatural, thank you for visualizing my idea) I would leave 2 times less free space on the edges of the shelf than you have shown. And I suggested this option not only because of the proportions, but also because of the plot itself - the paintings complement each other, rather than argue, creating a richer visual impression.

Like a storyboard from one movie/day...

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate your help. I THINK I will choose this one, but I’ll probably change my mind again - lol. i like the idea of several items on the mantle, but since the shelf next to it has quite a bit, I don’t think I’d like this area full too. This one ties in the honey oak color too and although I’d like to change that, I have to work with it. I do like the ones with the black frames, but since they are smaller, i feel like I’d more stuff with it.

@kimbers333, Oh, I've walked an early morning misty/foggy trail while hiking in LA and my head, eyes and ears were on a swivel ... plenty of ring doorbell mountain lions sightings in the area! Freaky as hell, when visibility was so low. No pines like the painting, but plenty of large live oaks with nice branches for the mountain lions to perch. From home, a 5 minutes drive away, you couldn't tell it was that foggy on the trails.

It seems like art that is framed to match the look of the fireplace would make a more synchronous highlight in this spot…especially with the contrasting surroundings…

Chispa, that does sound terrifying. Glad the big cat didn't show. I remember walking in Big Cat Canyon several times in Berkely, and it does make you check your surroundings a lot more. Mostly we just have Black Bear here, and they tend to run away, not that it doesn't get your heart pounding. The scariest bear encounter was with a baby- only about 25-30 lbs. Had me looking over my shoulder for mama bear, but luckily never saw her. No fog involved on that day. We have beautiful foggy mornings here often, and the sun rays pink, orange, and gold peek through. It seems quite magical to me, but again, I am not worried about mountain lions.

Bkind37, glad you made a decision for now-any of the three would look nice, and you know better how it looks with the rest of your space. And of course, you can always change your mind.
