Corner cabinet runs into range hood

The corner cabinet to the right of the over the range microwave doesn't open all the way because it runs into the microwave. If you switch the hinge to the other side of the cabinet door, the angle of the cabinet and microwave is such that the door won't open. Any ideas for how to get the cabinet door to open fully?

I would prefer not to get a low-profile hood/microwave. Ventilation is very important to me, so I actually want to replace the microwave with a real hood.

That shouldn’t be a corner cabinet. It should be a standard straight cabinet.

If you are switching to a hood - what is your plan exactly? Are you leaving everything in place around it? More info needed.

It's a corner cabinet issue. I'm not sure you can "fix" the issue without changing out the cabinet. How do you feel about an open cabinet (i.e., remove the door altogether)? Not an ideal solution, especially b/c it's so close to the range, but that may be your cheapest option.

Maybe someone else has other ideas.

Are you planning un under-cabinet rangehood? If so, you could consider getting a retracting hood so it retracts to under the cabinet when not in use and would likely allow the adjacent cabinet door to open more, if not fully. Retracting hoods aren't ideal or the best, but as long as it's externally vented, it will be better than an over the range MW/hood.

Perhaps you could accelerate your timing for switching to a rangehood?

Buehl has summed up your options in the above comment. It's unfortunate that a corner cabinet was installed vs. a regular cabinet.

Removing the door is the easiest/least expensive option. You also could remove the cabinet and install floating shelves if you prefer how that would look over a cabinet without a door.

There are plenty of instructions on how to convert a regular cabinet into a corner cabinet - but not ones to convert a corner to a regular one (at least not when I did a quick search).

So, you could accelerate your timing for switching to a retracting hood - or see if someone can modify your existing corner cabinet (or order a new one if possible) - all of which costs more $$ - but if you are planning to change to an under the cabinet range hood at some point in the future, it would make sense to do it now if possible.

How far does it open? If it does open half way or more, just not fully, you can get lazy susans to set on each level and access everything easily. I keep my spices on lazy susans in cabinets that are hard to reach.

My hope was to do an undercabinet range hood and leave the cabinets as they are.

A slide out hood is a good idea. I wanted to go for a 600 CFM hood, though, because i make a lot of pizza and therefore a lot of smoke. Does anyone know of a 600 CFM slide out that is good and not too loud?

I actually like the lazy susan idea a lot. The door opens at least six inches, probably a fair amoont more. So spices and cans could work well. If my wife can reach them too!

Regarding the idea to remove the door, maybe i could take it off the hinges, put it on velcro, and only use the cabinet for rarely used items…

That's some pretty prime kitchen real estate to devote to rarely used things.

Even with the door off, getting a lazy susan in there is going to be a trick. Possible, but not without a few choice words long the way.

A quick search found the corner cabinet you need. The problem with using a straight cabinet is the backsplash tile - this would fit right into the space used by the angled corner.

I meant basic lazy susans that sit on the existing shelves and need no install. Simple ones you can get at Target or TJ Maxx, etc. It'd be easy to slide those in. They are 12-15" wide and the adjustable shelves can tip up in the front to slide something in between them quickly. You only have to be able to reach the item in the front. I am 5' 4" and have them on shelves I cannot reach beyond the front of.

What AnnKH posted is what is known as an "Easy Reach" cabinet. In your case, you would replace your angled corner cabinet and replace it with this one with the hinge on the right wall and knob on the wall with the range/rangehood.

The question, though, is if you can get it to match your current cabinets in color/finish and door design. Preferably also in material, but if you can at least match the color/finish (e.g., matte) and door design, you may be OK, but you will need to check it out yourself and determine how good a match it is.

We have this one slide-out 600 CFM in Montreal so if you're in the US I'm sure you can find one. All is says is that it's manufactured in Italy.
