*I* would put in white cabinets and counter so the room is a blank neutral canvas. Then *I* would find a great wallpaper that could be changed in a few years to keep the room fresh. Do you like brass or chrome for hardware? That's your colour. Towels and rug colour from wallpaper. I personally do not hang artwork over wallpaper.

Do you have the budget for a custom vanity? If not, shop for a vanity you love, see what colors it comes in, then start building other colors around it for your paint, vanity top. Your wood floors are nice and can take a lot of different colors.

What do the other first floor rooms look like? What colors do you have on the first floor? What cabinets / countertops do you have in your kitchen?

If the vanity works well with the style and colors in the rest of the house I might keep the vanity and just update the countertop, faucet, lighting and hardware. The mirror is If it were a main bath I would prefer 2 drawer stacks, but for a powder room it isn't necessary.

The vanity would not work in my home (MCM / teak furnishing) or in my sister's home (Tudor with Victorian furnishings), but would work beautifully in my Sister-in-law's home. She has mostly country style oak furnishings. It would also work in my other sister-in-laws home that is traditional style with oak furnishings.

I also happen to like full size mirrors over a vanity. I am okay without a frame when it is a minimalist style, but with more traditional styles I like a framed mirror.

I am also okay with lighting over the mirror, but many people advise that the lighting should be side lighting on either side of the mirror so you don't get shadows from the overhead lighting when looking into the mirror. (The sun is overhead, so to me it isn't all that different than being outside . . .)

If keeping the oak I would paint the walls a green like October Mist.

The same color would be beautiful with your flooring and a different vanity. I love this color, but it doesn't work in my home where the main colors are wine red, purple and teal.

It is beautiful in my nieces home who has a lot of soft sage greens and navy or darker blues and in my sister's home where the color palette is fall colors, orange reds, golds, greens.

You will get a lot of advice telling you to do an all white bathroom, but that may or may not fit with the rest of your home and what you want is for colors to flow from one room to the next.

@Kendrah - When I replaced the vanity in my bathroom I found it was less expensive to buy 3 stock cabinets (Home Depot) and a quartz countertop and sink than it was to buy a ready built vanity.

The hickory flooring runs throughout the first floor, except for tile in the laundry room. My kitchen has stained maple cabinets and I am looking to eventually replace the countertops. The vanity is too low, so I will not be keeping it. The rest of my house is traditional.
