Patio sofa in living room

I have been looking for a sofa for my living room, that has a coastal feel. I like what I see in outdoor and patio furniture. I like the woven, rattan, sea grass sofas or sofas with wood backed arms. This would help eleviate the problem I have with my cat scratching my furniture. Are there good reasons we why patio furniture would not work in my living room. I have attached a photo of one living room couch that somewhat fits what I am looking for, however the choices are slim, in terms of living room couches.

I don’t see any reason why you could not use an outdoor sofa type piece indoors, if it works for you. And I suspect that you would not be the only person doing this. If you read reviews, some of those folks will likely show up to say that is what they are also doing. I find that Amazon reviews are a good place to find info about products and people’s experiences with them - as well as to see the creativity and amazing ingenuity of some folks.

However, since you posted this question here on this forum... I don’t know... It’s potentially a slippery slope. The general school of thought of some folks who frequent this forum is that you need to get a 10K sofa from a high end maker and or custom. Alternatively, just sit on the floor. :)

Personally, if no significant reasons why an outdoor sofa would not work inside - if it served my purposes, I would do it.

As far as kitty: Do they have scratching posts? And/or their own sofa ?

That is a beautiful chair and if you live somewhere coastal where that wouldn't be an odd look, I think it could work inside. But I had a cat who went to town on a wicker chair, so I don't know if this would solve your problem with your cat scratching your furniture. Unfortunately, you may not know until you have it in your house whether it will be attractive as a scratching post to your cat.

Yes, I do have scratching posts. I do have a wicker basket and he goes to town on that so that probably isn't a good idea. However, I do like the sofas I've seen with Arcadia wood.

I think your idea is actually brilliant - on a nunber of levels, including the design style you are going for - i.e. Coastal.

I just found this one on a really quick search for outdoor sofas. Specifically says that it’s suitable for ‘both indoor and outdoor ’, plus ”pet friendly”, etc. This one does not feature arcadia wood, but it’s a nice style.

Back in the 70s and down here is Florida currently we still use rattan furniture inside the home, but not the plastic/resin pieces.

When I purchased chairs for our living room I didnt realize they were considered patio/outdoor chairs. They are super comfy and even better, the oatmeal color fabric washes easily and I dont worry about the dog sitting on them

Lots of outdoor furniture isn't distinguishable from indoor. In fact, real wicker works better inside where it isn't subject to the elements. I don't see it as a problem--get what you like and your cats don't.

Just be aware, that most of the outdoor is not great cushioning on not great frames. There are no springs, those cushions sit on a hard platform, and they WILL pancake.

I would only do it with LLoyd Flanders. : ) and I would do it as chairs only. Buy a decent sofa in a very tightly woven fabric, and get a water bottle! Pssssssssst!

Stay far from RH and Pottery barn unless you are just after a "Look"

I think this could be a beautiful solution. I have two cats and am thinking about doing it myself. The key will be the type of woven material. I am opting for a distressed real woven chunky rattan (no resin) in a squared arm contemporary style. Anything with a finer/thinner weave may not stand up to claws. The other option is a regular sofa in velvet. Claws can’t get hold of a smooth velvet and I have two velvet chairs that have perfectly withstood any scratching attempts. (The cats move on when they realize their efforts are futile!)
