Don’t TRY to match the hardwood. If you can’t exactly match it, don’t do it. Instead, find a tile you like and replace the existing tile and the office carpet with it.

Do you think it will look weird if the entry/foyer and the office are the same but everything else including the kitchen is hardwood? Also, the stairs are half wood half carpet, which leads into the carpeted upstairs. I have seen the Rule of 3 for household floorings. Would hardwood be a bad choice upstairs? This doesn't include the bathrooms which are 2 different other types of tile...all neutral, but all old.

Any possibility that there’s hardwood under the tile and carpet that is the same? In other words, were wood floors covered

over? I have beautiful oak floors and in the kitchen which had the same wood, previous owners used black mastic down to lay
a
pine floor. Really bad decision.

The simple solution is to replace the carpet with better carpet. A wool and nylon mix is obe way to go. Stanton is a source.

My vote is all hardwood flooring upstairs/downstairs and wood on the staircase if you can match it and have a healthy budget.

Get 3-5 quotes from experienced, reputable, insured installers.. A good installer should be able to match the board size/type/color. They should also be able to get a smooth transition (no saddles!) from the old floor to the new.

Match your 2 1/4" red oak with provincial stain and oil base poly.

We had site stained red oak in our previous house and easily added more red oak that was all re-stained to match.
