The current white is fine, so not sure why you're changing it. You could just paint/wallpaper the backs in a color from the stone.

personally, I like the bookcases the color of the trim - if it were me, I would pick a wallpaper I loved and cut foamboard to fit the back walls of the bookcase and them tuck them in the back for an easily reversible change up

I like the bookcases white like the trim. I do agree to use wallpaper on the background and the idea of putting the wallpaper on foam board is a great idea. I also agree, that you need a rug, and the couches moved forward, so the coffee table is centered with the firebox. It looks a bit off right now. I would also remove the one odd shelf on the right, so the shelfs are the same for both bookcases.

They look good as they are. Your stone fireplace is beautiful and I would not want to draw attention away from it.

Some of the shelves are oddly spaced and cluttered. I’d address that.

Before considering painting them, I would take everything out and start over. There are way too many things in them. Use fewer, larger items with some books and a lot less small picture frames. I would also edit the mantel.

If you are going to get a rug as well as edit the shelves and mantel, then don't paint the bookcases. Honestly, they look good. It's unfortunate you didn't show us the rest of the room so we could possible suggest a change in layout that might scratch your itch for change. You could put the TV on the side if you faced the sofa towards the fireplace leaving the other sofa where it is. Then add a really great artwork to coordinate with a new rug.

I would go darker so that the fireplace is the focus. . .

I may try to get wood veneer that matches the mantle and use on the backs of the shelves.

If that isn't an option I would try to get some decor items that pull the mantle color into the decor. I like when something ties the fireplace and the built-ins together.

I always like to think about the big picture and with a dark stone fireplace and flooring, but everything else being light, I’d try to tie all the components together.

If you are open to adding a rug, let it dictate the paint color. I think the color combination below would be lovely in your room and add coordinated cushions, pull the seating in a bit closer, and consider stripping/staining the mantle to a lighter, less red shade (which is fighting with the floors). Regarding the bookcases, if you edit accessories a bit, remove the 4th shelf down on the right side, and add brass hardware, they will look great.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am in the process of redoing that room, but unfortunately having the whole house painted in the next couple of weeks so I wanted to address the painting of the bookcase now I will be replacing all the furniture that’s currently in that room, thats

Reduce the number of items on the shelves as kcooz recommended. There are too many framed items and too many small items. You need some larger decorative pieces and some books instead of many small items. Set the shelves at heights so that they match, right and left (there are too many shelves on the right side). Get a (not overly patterned) rug; move the sofas closer to the center and center the coffee table on the firebox. Find another place for the ottomans. I am leaning toward painting the bookcases a darker color drawn from whatever rug you select. I'm not in favor of the wallpaper idea, especially if it brings in another pattern. There is enough pattern in the fireplace stone and that should be the focal point. Select the rug first, and go from there.

Sorry the color wasn’t referenced, but your best bet is to bring home lots of similar paint shades and hold them up to the stone.

If you want to go darker, then change the entire mood of the room. Have a plan of how to achieve this. Go darker with the sofas, rug, and perhaps a more dramatic curtain with a pattern.

If you want to keep the current vibe, then paint the walls, trim and bookcases whatever white you are using in the rest of the house. Painting the bookcases a random different color before you know what you want to do with the room as a whole is not the way to go.

IMO take everything off the shelves then see what color works with the stone and when you pot stuff back only about 30% of what is there now . If you were my client I would suggest removing the shelves putting the TV above one cabinet and a piece of art above the other for a completley new look

Even with tv, and add a couple of cool lamps

Put photos on nice digital app for the tv, and rotate.

Spare the clutter, and stuff that you need to fill...shelves that are awkwardly wide and hard to merchandise )

A couple of complementary not busy art canvases, that don't compete with fire stone pattern....

Huge improvement either way.... a whole lot more statement either way and a lot less clutter, both

I'd re-do the shelves as others have suggested. More books, more space. I might paint the back only in a caponata, gorgeous eggplant color.
