I would paint the column the wall color first and foremost. To me eye it goes with nothing in the room and just draws my eye to it.

I would paint that column white like the rest of your trim or the color of the walls. I would not place a long console table there. The back of a sofa doesn't need to be "softened". It is what it is.

At the very least, I'd stain the column to match the stain on the staircase wood elements.

You could place bookcases behind the sofa if you think that improves the appearance.

Also, you might revisit all the art in the room. It seems too small in scale for your large walls.

I'd paint the column the color of the walls so it disppears more when you look into the room. Do that first and then decide if something else is needed.

I also suggest you paint the column the same colour as the wall as there doesn't seem to be anything else like it in the room.. A long console table behind the sofa would work very nicely. You can style it with 2 lamps and take the opportunity to upgrade the style of the 2 lamps in the room. A small plant on the side table would be all you need and a task lamp style for the cabinet next to the fireplace. With your high ceiling, I also suggest you update the ceiling pendant with a nice large one. The one I show is 40" wide x 25" high (the photo is a bit distorted should look wider and hot quite as high) from Dainolite.

I'd look for two identical pieces, like chests of drawers.

if you don't have outlets in the floor, no lamps or get battery operated.

Thank you everyone! I appreciate the great ideas. I am adding g another photo for context. There are actually two columns in the room that were stained to match the kitchen cabinets. That said, would you still paint them the wall color? Upper cabinets are white, bottom cabinets are same stain as columns

Yes, I would paint them. Seeing your space is more on the traditional side, I'm showing a large black chandelier.

The color of the posts tie to the island, kitchen shades, buffet, fireplace mantle and floor. I like what it adds.

The placement of the sofa and side table creates an awkward gap between them and the columns (which is why you are here trying to fill it). I wonder if swapping seating around will help eliminate the gap, open up the flow between the spaces and redistribute visual weight since it's off center and heavier on the window/fireplace/TV side. It would be better to have more photos and a measured floor plan but in the meantime, here's a rough idea:

• Move the sofa to face the window
• Move the white chairs where the sofa is now with the small round table in between
• Move the leather chair where the white chair is now
• Consider moving the vintage chair to a different space

If it were my house I would investigate what it would take to get rid of the columns. It would probably be a support beam in the ceiling. I think that this change would make your house easier to navigate without that post in the pathway to the kitchen.

New layout looks more appealing, but is the main purpose of this room to watch tv? And if so, can everyone see the tv? And how do you deal with glare from windows on tv screen?

I do like those changes from a design standpoint, but I wonder how that impacts TV viewing. Is the TV on a stand with an articulating arm? Or maybe TV watching is not a predominating activity in this room. I would still paint the columns to match the walls.

The white chairs swivel so just the brown chair is a problem for the tv - but honestly we do t watch much television in here. I am also considering some sort of blinds though to address the glare. And as per another posters suggestion will be looking for some larger wall art
