After researching, perhaps I can get the trim off by removing the screws and remove the grids and install a new trim piece, caulk and paint. Any suggestions appreciated.

Check with Home Depot to see if they can order gridless trim.

That trim usually holds the glass in, so be careful if you decide to remove it.

There should be several screws on each edge, normally covered by a plug, although the plugs don't always get installed.
