Seeking decorating advice for my new home!

I just bought a charming little house and would like some advice on decor for the main living area (living and dining in one fairly small room open to the kitchen), and for the primary bedroom. My typical decor style is very neutral and contemporary, but this house has a warm, cottage-y feel and all of the interior rooms are painted in various warm tones -- gold, rust, cinnamon etc.. I am not planning on repainting so I am trying to lean into a colorful palette and style that still feels sophisticated and not overly done.

Starting with the main living area, I will not be changing the furniture or rug as I am happy with them, and as I mentioned before want to work with the current gold wall color. I would like to possibly change the paint color in the entryway which is currently orange (please disregard the temporary clutter). The entryway is visible to the main living area as you will see below.

My main questions for this space are:

Did I overdo it on the pillows in the dining area? I originally had the black/beige and burgundy pillows there with one of the lumbar pillows that is now on the cane chair. I felt that the cane chairs didn't feel especially connected to the sofa seating, so I bought a matching lumbar pillow and put them on the chairs, then added the sphere pillow on the sofa. Is it too much?

Recommendations for decor on the little dining table? What I have there now feels a little random. Or should I leave it empty?

Is there too much burgundy across the room? I thought it might be better to remove the burgundy pillows from the white sofa and just have the black/beige and gold pillows so it feels a bit less matchy matchy?

Should I add in another color somewhere? I was planning on changing the artwork over the little bar cabinet to something that has some navy blue in it to tie back to the navy in the rug.

Are there too many plants in the room?

Recommendations for a new wall color for the entryway? I was thinking possibly an olive color.

Next, the primary bedroom. My concern with this room is its feeling a little too busy and not like the sophisticated, relaxing space I was hoping to create. I think I may have too many competing things going on and I'd like to calm it down a bit so it feels less overwhelming. Same with the other space, I want to work with the wall color. Changing the furniture is not an option with the exception of the bench and plant stand. There will be a TV over the fireplace and we're adding sconces to either side of the bed.

My questions for this space:

Do I need to paint the cherry fireplace border to white (like the trim) or black to make it feel more modern?

Is the bench working or is it adding to the busyness of the room?

Thoughts on my pillow choices on the bed? Any recommendations for changes that could help?

Is the black comforter a good choice or is it distracting?

Should I add some sort of seating or other furniture under the windows? There is a lot of space there but I don't want to make the room feel even more busy.

This is a lot! I've gotten some great advice on this platform in the past and am looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts and comments. Let me know if I can answer any questions, thanks in advance for your help!

Off the top of my head I think the dining area needs a different table. The small one looks put if place. I know you like the living room and it is cute but it’s very limited for seating. In the bedroom the bench seems to be the wrong colour. Otherwise it looks very nice to me as a general comment

I know you don't want to repaint, but I would have gotten rid of all those paint colors that I previously used in 1998 to 2007.

Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed feedback, its super helpful. The rug in front of the fireplace was very expensive so I need to keep it although I don't disagree with you. I can change the rug under the bed and will look to do that.

As for the dining table, are you saying to just remove what's on top of it because its small or are you saying get a bigger table? We weren't planning on putting a table in the space at all initially but decided to add a small one for practical purposes. It's just my husband and I living here and we don't eat at the table.

Bigger table. It looks weird as is with small one.

What do you use that table for? Maybe better understanding that can help us figure out how to make it feel a bit less odd.

For the fireplace rug - can you try it in another area? Either under the sofa and table. Or, in your bedroom but not under your bed. Just in the area under the window? It just doesn't look great with your coffee table.

What is your priority? As stated the table size is all wrong. If you want that look at least get an expandable round table so one intuitively knows there's a reason for the long bench. The space is magazine ready but functionally it misses--due to pillows as well as the bench/table ratio. I always take issue with these dining areas so far removed from the kitchen. Bringing food across the living room to eat is so awkward. Maybe there's a better way to use this entire space. As requested often here a drawn out measured dimensions of all walls and openings would give us the best idea of what you have to work with. If the windows in the bedroom had beautiful full length curtain panels the empty space under them would not be so glaring. I would like to see the dresser moved out of the corner. It's cramped looking and that would make room for a drapery stack. We don't see that wall so there's no way to know if it can be moved to the right but it really needs to be.

I am a contemporay girl no way would I not paint those walls unless you now plan to go cottage style. The DR???? is just odd and IMO if you have to move pillows anywhere to sit you have too many pillows.

I happen to love your space! Yes! The sphere pillow is not necessary. I would replace the mirror on the wall with art.
The small dining seems to be for having a drink and only having drinks, so it works for me. You said you don’t eat there, so it works . I actually like that it is small. It’s out of the ordinary and adorable. I love the living room area rug. The only thing that does not work for me is your drapes, I think it’s the color.

    *small dining table

I would switch the bench and little sofa, gold bench with dining room table, white sofa at the end of the bed. I’m not loving the rug under the bed, something lighter would be better, and some light drapes. I would look for another coffee table for the living room, maybe use that one in the bedroom with the sofa if there’s enough room?

Thank you to everyone for all of the helpful comments and suggestions, for some reason I'm unable to reply on individual comments so will do my best to address everything here. First, sharing a photo of the floor plan:

The main space off of the kitchen is small and cozy and really feels like one room. Since it's just my husband and I, we really only need seating for two in front of the fireplace and since that space is quite small (the rug is 6x9), the only other option that would have worked was a loveseat so we opted for the chairs instead.

As I mentioned before, we were not planning to add a dining table initially because we knew we wouldn't use it and felt it would take up a lot of precious space but not be practical for us. We had the white sofa already so decided to put it there with the thought that it would provide extra seating for when we have guests (the room is small enough that someone sitting on the sofa would still feel like they were sitting in the same space as the chairs in front of the fireplace). The addition of the small table was because I thought it would be cute to have if we wanted to play cards or have alternate seating for coffee or a cocktail, but it was a very intentional decision for it to be a small bistro table and I wanted to embrace the uniqueness of that. That being said, I like the look and the quirkiness and practicality of it, but will admit that I've struggled to make it feel connected (hence pillowgate!).

@Kendrah I agree with your point about the rug and coffee table. While I like the colors together I'm now realizing that the travertine may be a bit too contemporary for the rug. Unfortunately I don't see another option for the rug placement, but would be more open to changing the coffee table. I do think it would need to be light in color because the room needs it. Thoughts on style?

I love everything about your cute home, you've done very well! I especially like the little drinks table and the placement of it and the sofa, an interesting and cute idea. Very cozy feel to that room, colors work for me.

@arcy_gw I think you are right about curtain panels in the bedroom. Originally I was not planning to add them but given the blank space in front of the windows I think curtains would be a better option than adding more furniture. The dresser unfortunately cannot be moved because the door to the room is just to the right of it. I agree it looks a bit cramped there, but the only other option would be directly under the windows which would block the bottom of them.

Also, added a photo of the first floor plan per your suggestion, would be interested in your thoughts with that information. The small bistro style table was meant to be practical for just two people and style wise the idea was for it to be on the very corner of the sofa, I saw this idea on a couple of interior design creators I follow, but I will admit I'm concerned it may not be translating the way I hoped.

@njmomma Thank you! The small table was meant to be something out of the ordinary and unique, so I love that you see it that way. I think the curtains are coming across darker than they actually are, they are a shade darker than the wall color. Do you think I should go lighter? I was concerned that going too light might overwhelm the space. Let me know your thoughts.

@njmomma Also, you mentioned switching out the mirror for art, do you mean above the dresser in the bedroom?

@CC It seems the general consensus is that the rug in the bedroom is a miss, so I agree with switching to something lighter. Switching the bench and sofa is a really interesting idea that I hadn't thought of, I may play around with that. The coffee table may need to go, but I think I'm going to need to replace it with something equally light in color. Open to suggestions on this!

@doods Thank you! The little bistro table in the corner of the sofa was meant to be a little outside of the box, so I appreciate that you see it that way. The goal was cozy, so I'm really glad that's coming through!

My mistake, I thought the cutout
in the living room near the fireplace was a mirror

Now that I understand your desired use of the small table, I think your set up is perfect. Yes, I too have seen a lot of set ups in small apartments that make use of a small table near the sofa for a meal for two, place to sit and have coffee, or just another laptop location. It is perfect.

I'm going to push back on your furniture choices again because I think you can get a lot more "you" into this little space.

Why not a more contemporary small table at the sofa? Why the Pottery Barn 2010 look? There are so many good options for you from a vintage Hans Olsen type Roundette, to a design your own pedestal table from Room and Board, to something off the shelf from CB2. Or, maybe this is where you can get your lighter white stone look going instead of at the fireplace...

Back to the fireplace coffee table. "I do think it would need to be light in color because the room needs it." I don't think this area of the room needs in. In fact, this area will look more open if the table is a dark wood or other darker tone that melds into the chairs, rug, and fireplace better. Take for example the table between the chairs. You don't really see it. And that is a good thing because it makes the space feel more open, less busy, more modern. This space is defined by a black wall and anchored with dark chocolate chairs. A pop of light coffe table is not going to do the space any favors. Just be careful with woods and stones not to get too busy in contrast with the stone fireplace. (These might not work - just tossing things out there.)

Tiny detail, but I'd get black knobs for your cabinets on either side of the fireplace. Any easy way to streamline this area and make it slightly more contemporary.

Lastly, I think your dresser is great in your bedroom where it is. Get a new rug in. Get the foot of the bed bench out. Live with it for a while. You might not need anything at the windows. Nake is fine. This is a small space with enough to look at already. Your bedding is strong and nice to see those square windows as they are right across from the great three bed pillows. Less is more sometimes. (And, maybe paint the mantle surround black?)

@Kendrah I really appreciate your feedback, its been so helpful. Great question about furniture choices (2010 PB lol), I think it speaks to where I struggle with decorating because I see a space like this house and I associate it with a certain style/period and then I limit myself in terms of what I feel will work in the space. This process has been a great learning experience for me and I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons and pushing my boundaries more. Thank you for the suggestions, I think they're definitely in the direction I need to go!

I get what you're saying about the coffee table color making the space more busy, I've been looking at the room as a whole and trying to balance the lighter elements across the space because its not very bright naturally, but maybe that's not the priority.

As far as the bedroom, you are right, I need to edit and then sit with it for a minute. Will definitely be painting the fireplace mantle!
