Where are you located?

Texas.

I'm in zone 8a (or B?, we were changed back to 8 from 7b with the last "revision"). I've never worked with anything this small. The only thing I have ever had are "bought" hosta, for lack of a better term. I would particularly like one of these to survive. It's turned out to be unique (not solid color nor Risky Business).

I think that the medium they are in is too coarse for over wintering anything this small. (I'll add photos later today as I have to charge the camera battery.)

Bkay, your problem will not be frost in and of itself, it will be standing water, as in the standing water you may find on top of frozen potting medium. Your best bet will be to simply put a tarp over the pots once the leaves have died down and there should be ample moisture in the medium to carry the roots through the winter. If your medium is coarse you've already won half the battle. The roots do not need food over the winter, just a bit of moisture and if you're concerned about the medium becoming too dry just do a finger check in January and see how moist it feels. If at such time you feel it's too dry you can simple add a bit of rainwater and cover the pots back up again.

As you probably know I grow most of my hostas in pots and our winter are much wetter than yours are I suspect. My biggest concern is with the smaller pots where the potential for the medium to stay too wet are quite high and I will put all of my smaller pots up to and including 2 gallon ones in a sheltered location, not because of frost but because of moisture.

At my old house I put my 2" pots by the house north wall, had good results. We had huge acorn harvest this year. It is going to be one long winter.
