How to save half a banana?

last month

I was never a big cereal eater but an now loving my grape nuts with half a banana on them. How do I store the other half of a banana? Putting it in the fridge makes it mushy. On the counter gets fruit flies.

How do you save a half of a banana?

Buy small bananas. They're nicer than the big ones anyway. Or eat the whole thing. Why only half?

But the half will keep fine until the next day if you wrap the peel back over it. Do not refrigerate. Put it in a Tupperware box if flies are a problem.

Agreed. Open just to the point where you want to cut it. Make your cut. Wrap the cut edge in the peel, and put in a small air tight container. Open it up and slice the edge off, then peel. I've had good luck just leaving it out with the opened parts of the peel, hanging in their own shape, but that won't do with flies. (The guys at my college liked to say, "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana." which is sometimes (albeit humorlessly) used academically to illustrate certain structures, and has its own humorless Wikipedia page.)

    1. how to store the banana without refrigeration - I simply cut my banana in 1/2 and use plastic wrap over the cut end of the 1/2 I am not eating.

    2. how to prevent fruit flies - wash your bananas when you get home from the store. Fruit flies lay their eggs on the banana peel. 30 seconds under warm water and you have washed the eggs away.

We fold the peel ends over the cut end and slip it into a snack-size ziplock. It keeps pretty well till the next day, or even a day more if it was very firm to start with.

Dip the sliced end of the banana in some lemon juice + wrap the end with plastic wrap + I put it in a baggie - making sure that I get the extra air out of the baggie before closing it.

Anyone else have a dog that comes running when you peel a banana? Very hard not to share the leftover half when you are being stared at by sad "puppy" eyes!

^YES, they hear me reach on top of the fridge fo a banana. I peel part way, give myself some, give them a bite, wrap up in the peel in the fridge, and then they get the firts ugly slice the next morning.

They also know that the sound of an aluminum can being crushed means we are all walking out to the recycling bin.

None of my dogs have ever shown interest in bananas. But, after my first dog, who was food obsessed, I have never given the other three a bite of .human food.

Labrador type dogs are open to all food types: carrots and bananas but also oranges, kale stems, and bell peppers. I’m happy to share healthy snacks. They eat only in the kitchen.

We joke that one of our dogs will eat horse poop ... which is to say she will eat pretty much anything! She actually ate horse poop when we first adopted her and she was very underweight for her size/breed. She wouldn't eat it now, but both of our big dogs love rabbit poop when they find it in the backyard!

Ours are not allowed to beg, but we do give them some human food, like the fatty bits after eating steak or a few pieces of leftover steamed vegetables ... they know they get it at the kitchen sinks as we are cleaning the plates. They look sad when there are no leftovers!

    No lemon juice? Use vinegar.

Half a banana leftover? Isn't that kind of like leftover bacon?

I'm with Floral - why limit oneself to half a banana? I'd just eat it 😁

And when I have extra bananas I can't use up right away, I peel and break them into chunks and freeze for baking or smoothies.
