I have an Eden climber that’s been growing well overall, but I’ve recently noticed some very thick, strong shoots emerging from the base of the plant. They look different compared to the rest of the canes—much thicker and almost out of proportion with the established growth.
I’m wondering if these are just new basal canes (which I know climbers send up from time to time) or if I should be concerned that they might be suckers coming up from the rootstock. I don’t want to cut off healthy new growth if it’s part of the plant’s natural renewal process, but I also don’t want to let suckers take energy away from the rose.
Has anyone else seen this kind of growth on Eden, and how do you tell the difference between healthy basal shoots and rootstock suckers? Any advice on whether I should prune them, train them, or remove them would be really appreciated.
