Big hardwoods are one of my favorites.

For comparison, here's one of my sugar maples' trunk. Pretty typical.

Great trees. I like the black maple bark better

Black maples are beautiful trees.

When I was deciding on planting a maple tree for my yard, Acer nigrum had a little higher zone hardiness than sugar maple and according to specifications, appeared fussier about having more moisture, better soil and higher humidity requirements. They also are a slower growing tree with a shorter lifespan than Acer saccharum, which is native in my area.

So, we have a winner!

About 15ft. tall, 5" caliper and might've been even larger if the soil here was better.
