Hack for the unfinished edge of granite?

last month
last modified: last month

We had the bathroom at our weekend cottage redone and there was a ”miscommunication” about the finished edge of this piece of stone sill.

The miscommunication was my husband didn’t tell the stone guy to finish the edge this piece.

Ripping it out is not an option.

Anyone have any ideas on polishing it or applying some sort of sealer to give it a more polished look?

I'm sure that installers have a polishing wheel that can be used to wet sand a small piece of stone.

Seems you have bigger issues with the 'tile' looking like it's peeling off the face of the wall.

The corner of the granite would also have looked better if it was rounded to match the Schluter profile below it. Never leave the design details to the trades!

I might write a post about the dangers of being one’s own GC………

The tile has a wavy finish. I didnt realize how it would look once it was on the wall. the smaller, cut pieces do catch the eye.

think the whole ledge needs to be slightly bigger. it should cover the verticle plane completely.

Did a pro NEED to be told this bit should be finished?

The tile work doesn't look particularly well done either -- though I love the two-tone color.

Mrs Pete you do tell the fabricator which sides to finish if they are just supplying the pieces and not doing the installation as in this case.

And Bev is correct- you can ask the fabricator if they have a way to do it on site. The person installing the piece should have caught this before it was set but that’s water under the bridge.

the problem started with the fact my husband was controling the process. he ordered the stone at the stone yard. He didnt double check the cut sheet and thr stone yard didnt finish the edge.

Contractor was on site abd my husband said install it and we will deal with it later.

and here i am dealing with it later.......

I had a similar issue with my kitchen stone. I contacted the contractor and had him come back to correct the problem by polishing it. It was a quick fix.

Your husband needs to pay the $300.00 callback charge.

thanks for the feedback. i am going to send the pictures to the stone yard and ask them to put us on the schedule to an on site fix/favor for another reason. i have no problem paying for it since it was a husband-created issue.

Can we see a photo of your bathroom? It’s such a unique tile, I’d like to see it from further back.

You are not polishing that next to that tempered glass. Unless you want yo buy new glass too. Uninstalling the glass and stone, is the only way.

IMO the whole thing is a mess that tile job is awful and IMO the unpolished granite is the least of the issues but why was that chosen with those tiles at all?

I'd pull it off and do it differently-- a little overhang all around, rounded edges, and polished on the end. It's not going to look all that much better just polished. Can't see what all is involved, but it looks like you just need to remove the glass, pop the top off and replace it and reinstall. Quite possibly easier than trying to refinish in place.

Let the fabricator tell you what they can and cannot do with the existing glass in place. A new piece that overhangs on all sides would create problems with the existing glass door so it doesn’t seem worth it to make those dominos fall.

Thank you sharing your very unique tile!

I wonder if you could add tile or schluter-like metal over it if it can’t be polished.
