Deciding on hallway paint color

We’re painting our downstairs and upstairs hallway and trying to decide on a color. We were initially thinking matching the living room (Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray) but then we got advice to consider a different color, maybe a little darker. We’re keeping the green accent wall (primarily because we don’t mind it and it’s painted over wallpaper, so we’re not going to mess with it). Any suggestions for hallway color? For what it’s worth, that side of the house is north facing so doesn’t get as much light. Thanks!

    Why darker? Why not lighter?

"We were initially thinking matching the living room..."

Based on the second photo, that's what I would do. Imagine the color of the wall with the couch extended onto the wall with the door. Also, the Edgecomb Gray webpage shows Boothbay Gray -- similar to your green paint -- as a coordinating color.

Extend the living room Edgecomb into the hallway.

Were your green wall paintable, I'd go for another color in this hallway, but because it is there to stay, I wouldn't introduce a third color into the equation. Yes, this hall is technically a different space, but visually it is really part of the living room and having green plus another color in the living room - three colors total, gets to be a bit Mondrian.

Since the paper has already been painted over, another coat won’t make much of a difference when eventually removing. Given the open, shared space, I’d continue with EG so it feels larger/less broken up. Then consider a bit of editing to tie things together. Suggest removing the art over the radiator and add two prints near the window to draw the eye there.

Suggest replacing the LR art for something that works better with rug and wall color, hung horizontally and a bit lower.

Continue the Edgecomb Gray but geesh, the foyer needs some decent quality light. It' looks like a bare bulb and takes on a basement appearance.

Haha totally agree @BeverlyFLADeziner! We redid the stairs last year and have been totally dragging our feet on replacing the light. Any suggestions for a light there?

And thank you @Maureen for your artistic insight. We hung those pieces when we first moved in just because we already had them and wanted to get something on the wall. Four years later here we are haha.

Also new to Houzz and no idea how to comment on someone else’s comment. Thanks for the insight all!

I my mind what's important is the quality of light and not so much the fixture. You could keep the cost down and simply install surface mounted can lights.

Make sure they are lamped with LED PAR bulbs.
