Please help with furniture placement!

last month

Please help me with the furniture arrangement in this living room. It’s a wonky space and is so familiar to me that I feel like I get hung up on past furniture configurations. My husband and I have two grown children, and the home hosts most family gatherings (including our small extended family). This is the only living/family room area in the home.

  • Doorway at bottom of the floor plan is coming from the foyer. It can remain an actual door or become a simple cased opening.
  • Opening on left is a wide archway with two steps up leading to the dining room and the rest of the home. The bottom step is brick and protrudes 13” into the living room.
  • Fireplace on right has a raised brick hearth you can sit on. It protrudes 18” into the living room.
  • Window at the top is being changed to sliding or swinging doors. The opening is currently 8’ wide, but may be increased to accommodate three sections for the doorway instead of two (I don’t know why I’m not liking a pair). Where the door actually opens is flexible and may be dictated by the furniture layout. The window faces south and leads to a fenced in courtyard with a 25 year old oak tree that is roughly 28’ from the opening and slightly off to the right (the tree isn’t centered on the window). The red line on the floor plan represents a brick wall that extends beyond this living room and is visible when you look out the window/doorway.
  • Television has traditionally been placed to the left of the fireplace. This seems to be the best spot so the view out the window can be enjoyed while watching the TV. However, I’m open to ideas!
I think that’s it! Lol. I tried to include everything, but please let me know if you have any questions or need any clarification. TIA!!!
