I’d say facebook marketplace would be a good option, especially if you’re patient :)

Second hand is likely your only option sadly.

Are you missing a "0" in that number? You can buy a sofa for $400, but not one of reasonable quality, unless you score a great find on a second hand sofa.

You can get this from IKEA

This sofa below is on craigslist and it's a better buy than the IKEA sofa.

Width is measured from the front of a sofa to the back. Length is measured from arm to arm, so your max length is 77”. And I just saw a Walmart ad for a small sectional for under $400. And sites like Wayfair have constant sales.

Sorry IMO IKea might be good cholice I hesitate to buy used upholstered furniture it always is a bit creepy to me At least with Ikea you get a bit of a warranty usually and you know no one had some youcky thing happen on the sofa

I have purchased amazing sofas on Facebook Market place and craiglist for two decades. I have one now that is a tank, gorgeous, $700. I was cool with all this until our building had bed bugs brought in by the caregiver for a 101 year old woman. It really opened my eyes to the potential problems and how they can be anywhere. Even in nice homes. No more soft goods from FBMP for me.

Of course you must always be careful where an upholstered piece is acquired. I've done well with charity resale shops. Sofas are usually gently used and it's been moved out of someone's home by someone other than me.

However, I just purchased these great pieces off Craigslist a few weeks ago. Full grain leather, a piece discontinued from IKEA that originally sold or $2k+ and I purchased them for $200. People make changes in their lives and items need to go.

We bought an inexpensive couch for our basement from the Brick years ago. Within the year the fabric on an arm frayed and in the second year, padding and springs were an issue. For $400, be prepared for it not to last long. If you go the second hand route be sure to inspect it well and sanitize. On the pro side, you can find some really great deals, but will have to get it home.

I bought my matching sofas on CL or FB several years ago. They were in someone's formal room and were not used much. It did take me a couple weeks to get the curry smell out lol

But we've been using them ever since!

Also, we love our IKEA sofa too. It's held up just fine for 3-4 years and I wash the covers about twice a year. or less

I'd buy IKEA before I bought something online

Also, anything I buy off FB or somewhere, I always leave it in the garage a few days in case something crawls out. Then I clean it really well before it's brought inside. Our sofas sat in the sun a few days as well.
