Temp change to traditional fireplace?

We do not use our fireplace and I cannot seem to find much on anything that others have done to transform this area into anything other than putting logs into the fireplace or some type of fake backdrop inside of the fireplace insert. We are thinking of putting a piece of plywood against the fireplace opening And inserting shelving of some sort and updating the mantelpiece to have a more streamlined sleek look. Another idea was possibly making it some type of a nook with a bench and some pillows for a separate seating area. Has anyone ever done anything other than use the fireplace for the fire. It’s wasted space. I’m not putting a TV above the mantle because I decorated a lot for the holidays. I just wouldn’t mind having this space for shelving or something other than a useless fireplace. We will be painting it the same color as the walls around it because I don’t like seeing it pop against the wall. TIA!

My sister removed both the fireplaces in her house, and replaced them with TV console and storage.

If you do not like it get rid of it . The ideas you post are not ging to fool anyone and seem contrived to me. You need to post ics of the whole space too

What you're considering seems like far to go for temporary. If the traditional style of the fireplace doesn't fit with the house, redo the mantel and the rest of the surround. But if it does fit, and you're not going to be in this house very long, any change could be an expensive mistake. Remove it completely if you are going to be in the house a long time and don't like it or need it.

If your use for the fireplace is only for holiday decorating it makes for 11 months of pain. Removing is expensive so I would embrace it for what it is. Large, remote or timer controlled flameless candles during cooler months, a beautiful floral arrangement (artificial or dried that you LOVE) during warmer months. Thank you for NOT putting TV over fireplace that can create 2 black holes unless you have a framed “art” TV.

you could always take everything off it and arrange the room/furniture pretending it’s not there, i’ve seen this done in the UK - if you do some online sleuthing you’ll get some ideas

Tear all the mantel, the hearth , all trim above fire box, all stone tile surround off the wall. Repair the entire wall and all drywall, to include a fix to flooring if none under the raised hearth..

Park a park a solid console in front to obscure fire box and , and add a huge framed mirror.

The point is REMOVE totally what is there and repair. You can leave the fire box, and the glass only if.....

you make certain gas line to fire is cut off, and inspected for safety before ALL above.

How you accessorize will at least make it a feature, while adding plywood or shelves will make it an eyesore. Suggest painting the brass black as well.
