I like a two toneed look, rather than painting the rails, etc. a Ebony stain to compliment the Walnut stain.

Some type of pattern on the stairs would break up all the wood

Same as the flooring at the bottom of the stairs and a runner coulld be nice if you find one that works with the other stuff in the home

There is no reason to expose stair/tread riser anything.

Go to a broadloom store, and do a full edge to edge runner, There are LOADS of patterns, stripes, textures.

There's already enough "wood" going on.

A view standing at the bottom looking up and a view standing at the top looking down would help. A runner or stretched in across the whole stairs works best in certain situations. An already narrow stair can be made to look even narrower once a runner is in as it accentuates the bowling alley effect. Especially if there are accenting bands on the edges. I’m leaning towards Jan’s suggestion just based off that. But, the additional shots would help.
