Advice on exterior makeover

last month

My 1960 ranch w revival front needs a glow up. Plan to remove shutters and paint. Would like to leave brick alone but change paint on trim, columns, gutters, etc. I need color advice. I dislike the white columns but hard to imagine painting them dark. All suggestions welcome.

The entrance to this home is so over the top that I kind of like it. Yes, remove shutters. Leave brick alone. Go to a paint store website where you can upload your pic and try different paint colors on the columns.

UGG those shutters!! They are covering up a beautiful brick home!! Your first pics are so in shadow we can't really appreciate the brick. 100% DO NOT paint that brick! It does appear a good power wash is in order. Will the brick under the shutters be different color given fading than what's exposed? I would be looking to choose a color from the brick. I would go lightest but dark is really fashionable right now. What are your tastes in colors? From what we can see your brick gives you many options!! I think you are stuck with the white columns. I haven't seen columns any other color. A total redesign of the portico swapping columns for beams and removing the dental trim would be more involved than a simple 'glow up".

I like the white columns. They look nice. I think the whole house looks nice. I dont mind the shutters either. They add interest to the plainer look on the ends of the house. I would be careful taking them down. It is possible, the brick will look a lot different under the shutters, and you may just want to put some of them back on, once you are done, with getting the brick cleaned and the painting done.

The shutters look cheap IMO. Toss.

Hopefully the front columns are not nearly as in-your-face as that picture makes them appear. They seem to belong on a southern two-story plantation home, not a ranch. Choose a dull plain color that matches your brick and paint your columns and trim with it.

Your brick is very nice and the right color trim and columns will add sophistication.

Your whole house, roof, driveway and retaining wall all need a good power washing. I would do that first and then take a fresh look at the cleaned up house.

The entry, with the columns and pediment is cool. I would not change anything about it. If you try, you'll probably end up with a mishmash of styles and portico that looks tacked on. As it is, it works. I'd leave them white or paint them and your trim a creamy white. Paint the downspouts to match the brick. A perfect match isn't important, but right now, they echo the columns and they are not a design feature, they're a utility.

I would paint the columns and dental molding the same taupe as the front door.

It looks like the shutters have seen better days. They give the house a "Grey Gardens" feel so I would remove them and just have the brick.

Washing the brick is a good idea but a powerwash could damage mortar so use caution.

My two cents- paint the columns and white trim closer to the color of the grout on the brick, a grey or beige like accessible beige. No bright white trim with brick.
The shutters look dated but the windows will looks too small if they are removed. I would leave the shutters and paint them a second mid tone trim color,

I think this is one of those homes that would look better if the brick was limewashed with all white trim.

I would prefer the brick as it is, rather than lime washing. To me, that makes the house look older and a bit dirty.

    Yes for lime washing!!

Leave the brick be, I am of the opinion that limewashing brick ruins the appeal of brick. All white trim, fascia, gutters etc., lose the shutters, would be where I would start.

I would remove tha totally inappropriate entry stuff pillars and all/ The mess is the ebnty pediment / pillars talk about lipstick on a pig and honestly the house was no t a pig before this mess
