The evergreen fog is the wrong choice. It clashes with the stairway carpeting. I would pick a color that matches the lighter color walls, and use a satin or semi gloss paint on the stairway walls, so it will be easy to wipe clean of small child finger prints, etc.

Can you help us understand what you were trying to accomplish? Do you have a color plan for your home?

Evergreen Fog is pretty dark (LRV=30). It works in some homes and some rooms, but for a typical stairwell it is going to be too dark.

And no - there isn't a good starting and stopping point on the wall - you generally change colors at an architectural break. If the wall continues the color continues. (There are a few exceptions, but not many.)

I would paint all the trim white through out the house. But, start with the railings and the trim at the top of the stairs. Continue on with the evergreen walls in the stairway.

Replace the ceiling light with a white fabric shade and use the same ceiling light at the bottom of the stairs.

Make the stair carpeting work by adding a rug at the bottom of the stairs which relates color wise.
