Update Exterior

last month
last modified: last month

Hello everyone,

We have lived in our house for six years now and we would like to update the exterior. I am a bit limited as there are things I cannot change right now (windows, roof, brick stays).

We need to replace the front door, paint or stain the garage door, and replace the front porch posts. I love Craftsman, Rustic Craftsman, as well as English Country type of styles.

Our interior style is a mix between rustic and mission style furniture.

Does anyone have suggestions of what to change/update? I would really appreciate your ideas!

New door in a bright color. Garage door paint a color that is in the brick. Pressure wash the brick. And add landscaping.

Maybe you should consider the warm white color for the paint on the house.

Paint the garage door in a color of the brick, perhaps update ( larger) light fixtures flanking doors ( garage & entry ) , refresh landscaping & front door.

What about a dramatic front door. A real eye-catcher.

    This is Craftsman/Prairie style.

And replace the spindly iron furniture with wooden pieces.

That’s a lovely brick home! A nice wide driveway and open flat front yard. Very nice.

Is the roof in good shape? It looks like it needs a good wash at the very least.

The mauve-ish brown on the garage and front door is too pink. Pick a dull color from the brick to paint the garage door. Not too light. Larger sconces at the garage. Bronze maybe.

I like the idea of a sophisticated real wood door + sidelight. Stained, not painted.

Are you into landscaping? Lots of possibilities for a small tree or two, some judicious pruning of your evergreens, and new easy care perennials. Your current plantings seem too disjointed and mixed for my taste.

Too much contrast. I see what the idea was with matching the trim to the roof, but it's too intense. I would sample colors similar to the brick color like BM Elephant Tusk and BM Linen White or SW Iconic Ivory... sorry, couldn't get the colors to load

and paint the trim including the garage door so it minimizes the contrast. the drip edge and trim just under the roof is fine in a brown tone, just not accenting everything else. a nice full view front entry door to compliment the large window. Change out the 'jewelry' large light fixtures flanking the garage door and front entry.

I'd paint all your trim and your garage doors a cream that goes with the brick and focus on colorful landscaping. It's a nice house with a pleasant exterior. As the old song goes, if you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.

Updating your exterior can make a huge difference, it’s the curb appeal equivalent of a great first impression. The key is to find a cohesive balance between architecture, color palette, and materials. If your goal is a modern refresh, start by simplifying, go for clean lines, fewer contrasting trims, and a unified palette (for instance, warm greige siding with black windows and wood accents always looks timeless).

If you’re leaning traditional, update selectively: swap dated fixtures for matte black or aged brass, upgrade house numbers, and add layered landscaping for texture and depth. A new front door color can also be a game-changer, deep navy, muted olive, or even a stained wood tone adds instant warmth. Don’t forget the lighting, soft, warm exterior lights make the house look inviting day and night.

Will suggest you replace the garage door with one that has lites (windows) in it. A completely flat garage door is one of the most unappealing things on a house.
