iPhone peeps - have you bought a new one lately?

last month

I just bought a new one after six years. My old one was getting flakey with charging and battery life. I had an 11Pro and got a 17Pro. I thought it was about the same size but it's a bit bigger and bulkier. I don't really like that but I wanted the better camera. My phone before the 11Pro was one of the small ones and I kind of miss that. DH has a Mini and it's nice and compact but alas you can't get a small one anymore and I doubt I would want to go back to the smaller screen. I can't imagine hauling one around the size of a Max. I still try to put mine in my pocket whenever possible. I can't say for sure but I think the price of the Pro has probably doubled since I got the 11. Apple has certainly made it easy to transfer everything from the old phone to the new one - very slick. I need to take some time to figure out the new camera features but otherwise got it up and running in a few hours - including relogging into everything.

I went from a 12 pro to a 16 pro a couple of months ago. The 17 wasnt out yet. I didn’t notice much of a size difference. The new phone seems a little thicker, but I got used to that in a couple of hours. I bought new phones for my kids at the same time. We’re all happy.

I havent but am seriously considering an upgrade this weekend -- not for any specific reason but I did notice that I can read text on my niece's iphone17 better than my own iphone11. I don't upgrade all that regularly so I will likely go with either a 16 or 17.

I am going to be near the AT&T store tomorrow -- already told my friend that I will be with that I am going to make a stop. Thinking I will upgrade both the phone and my ipad.

I am buying a new one next week, so this is a timely thread. I like the size of mine (a 14), but the battery life is now awful. DD also informed me that the 14 is ”very outdated.” 😂

It bothers me that they have planned obsolescence built into them, but that seems to be the way of the world now.

I am buying one for all 3 kids for Christmas. I will wrap up toy phones so they can actually pick out what they want. I had more fun pickout the toy phones. Still happy w my 16 Pro.

@texanjana - I actually think Apple is pretty good at not making the phones obsolete all that soon plus they last a long time. My understanding is they keep providing security updates for seven years which is a lifetime for an electronic device. The last time I bought a new one was because I could no longer get updates. Obviously I keep mine a long time so whenever I do buy a new one I buy the latest model.

@Funkyart - I do think the new phone has better resolution. I also changed some zoom setting to make things larger - not sure if I like that. Some things are perfect and some are too big. The good thing is I can read all of that without my glasses so I may leave it as is. Takes a little while to get used to anything different.

Great to know, 3katz! Yeah, even with all my vision issues, making things bigger is not usually helpful. As you note, it doesnt always work well .. and the text is blurry at every size lol. High resolution and high contrast make the biggest difference for me.

I have an AT&T business account and I just learned that I probably can't do the upgrade at my local store. I will call later this morning and see what they can do for me.

I had a 14pro and DH talked me into getting a new one so now I have a 17 pro max. I debated the size. This is the first time I have bought the max size. It definitely does not fit into my pockets as well, but I like the screen size. I love the battery life but bought it mostly for the camera improvements. I really like the feel and size of DH’s 17 air, but I NEED the nice cameras. My sister in law happpily took over my 14 pro as it was still in great shape..

I am curious .. do you all carry your phone in your pocket?

I have but don't like to. If I am wandering around the house or doing a task-- i have been known to slip it into my bra if i am wearing a vneck top. Crass, yes-- but convenient. If I am out and about, it slips into an outer pocket of my crossbody. I am also known to just not be near my phone when at home. I don't like being tethered to it outside of work hours (and sometimes inside of work hrs)

One of the reasons I finally bought a cellular Apple watch was so I didn't have to carry my phone all the time, especially around the house and garden.

I have a 14 pro so I think I can wait for a few more iterations before replacing it.

I don’t carry my phone around the house. If I’m home it‘s generally on the charging rack in the kitchen. If I’m out and about, it’s in my purse.

I tend to buy pants and or leggings with pockets deep enough for a phone and my small wallet/ car fob. I use a crossbody/ fanny bag when I lack pockets and a backpack sling when I need to carry more. I love the freedom of not lugging and keeping track of a bag

Another cellular iWatch wearer here so I don't have to carry my iPhone around the house or when I'm outside. I usually wear jeans and my phone fits in the back pocket. I don't ever wear sweat pants or leggins so that isn't a problem.

I have a 15 Pro now will upgrade to a 17 Pro soon.

Upgraded 2 months ago, I went from a 11 Pro to a 17 Pro. Yes, I wish it was a little smaller but I am so happy to have a phone that keeps a charge I will deal with a little inconvenience on the size. I do not typically keep my phone in my pocket though.

Timely thread. I have a 12 and my battery life isn't that great anymore. It is 5 years old. My old phone died day before Thanksgiving 2020 so I had to do a curbside pickup since nothing was open during COVID.

BTW for my American Airlines CITI card I can get something like 8,000 bonus miles and points for getting a new phone through the AA shopping portal, so I'm definitely going to do it and get a 17. I see people at concerts getting great photos that look like they're in the front row with incredible resolution.

I bought a new 17 a few weeks ago. I don’t love the animations or look of the fonts, appearsnce of the native apps, etc. It looks very cartoonish, for some reason, with none of the elegance of previous versions. I bought it because my battery only lasted about six hours, and because the 17 has a you-choose-the-function button on the side of the phone that gives me instant access to the camera without touching the screen or opening any app or using facial recognition to open the lock screen. It’s a great feature that I guess makes up for the new preschool look of the native apps.

No I dont carry my phone in my pocket. Funky, like you I don’t like to be tied to a phone. I have a Iphone SE, the last one. It is the small phone and i absolutely HATE a larger phone. I’ll hold on to thus one as long as its problem free. After that I think I will have to find something else. Apple is all i have had for as long as i can remember!! I dont like wearing a watch either, so an apple watch is a no-go. Woe is me!! 😢 (Tina Marie)

I have to say since I got an Apple watch I don’t carry my phone around the house as much. So I’ve found the find the phone function on the watch more helpful than I expected. If I’m working outside though I like to have it with me as I don’t do much on the tiny watch screen.

I have the last SE model, also. I don’t remember how long I’ve had it but I’m guessing 6 years? When people, particularly younger people, see it they always incredulously ask ”is that a home button?!” Yes, an ancient relic from the days of yore. I hope it last for a few more years because I just invested a whole $9 in a 6 ft charger cord. I didn’t realize how much I’d like the longer cord, should of done it years ago.. If I ever update the phone, I’ll have to further splurge on a long charger, because, of course, the current cord won’t fit the newer models.

    I don’t have and don’t want a watch.

I updated to the 16 Pro from 11. I wear my apple watch and don’t carry my phone in my pocket.

I updated to the 17 Pro Max about a month ago, replacing a 13 Pro Max which I really liked but it was getting old and the battery was starting to go. Plus the Verizon deal was hard to pass up with the tradein. I also bought DH a new Apple watch for Christmas so the deal was even better.

I do like many of the features including the camera button activation, the camera itself for the most part, and in general the upgrades I keep discovering that simplify many day to day things. I’ve had a few frustrating things such as previous settings not transferring exactly (phone volume for example) that I’ve had to figure out. Thank goodness for Apple help online. I almost always find my answer.

Another is the portrait setting in photos. It seemed as if all mine I was was testing were blurry. I did what I always do and Googled Apple help and sure enough there have been issues with this. It ’might be’ a hardware issue, so I’m still trying some of the tips to see if I have better results. This was disappointing since I bought it for the improved camera. I will be exchanging it if I think it’s a hardware issue.

I don’t put mine in my pocket very often. I have never liked having anything in my jeans pockets. I do put it in a side pocket if I can zip it or if the pocket is deep enough.

Another SE old phone owner. The only feature I really like more about apple over other products was the home button lol so when it dies it will be the last apple product I have bought. I find the company shameful and the products over rated. But I am of the mind set of if it aint broke dont fix it…
