random archeological find

I was relocating some cookbooks and came across these dried flowers in paper towels between the pages. Who, what when, where and why? IDK

Seems a shame to dump them. I think they are hydrangea. Now what?

Unless you have some sentimental attachment to them, I’d probably Kondo them. You’re already halfway there. You’ve taken a picture. Now you can set them free.

Has the cookbook where they were found always been yours? If so, did either of the DDs experiment with flower pressing?

Huh, maybe. What do people do with such things anyway?

I don’t know. I’ve always thought it was something that people did a long time ago for sentimental reasons - a flower from a wedding bouquet; a flower from a prom corsage; a flower from the funeral spray of a loved one.

Some people have used them for art. Arranging them in such a way
to be placed under a glass frame. My husband’s grandmother did this all the time. Some really pretty art.

Or….. send them to @Sueb20😁 she can create something for you

They are very nice for collage on a number of surfaces.

A friend likes to make tiny collaged glass votives as gifts.

(not these - just web images I found)

People include them in greeting cards or make greeting cards with them glued into an arrangement on top. Also used in potpourri, if they retain a scent.

carol, those votive could be cute

Or learn how to make cyanotypes.

I especially like Oly's note card idea (and Sue's.)

You could also just put them back in a book for someone else to find later.

My parents had friends, a much older couple, and their house was full of little bits and pieces of interesting stuff, and they would do things like seed their entire yard with Georgia Blue Creeping Speedwell so they had a purple lawn for some months in the summer and then mow it when the grass got too long.

A lot of their windowsills had pieces of glass cut to fit, so they didn't have to worry about putting plants on top, but under the glass were things like leaves and pressed flowers and things like that. All kind of cluttery and so forth but interesting.

This is the type of votive my friend uses - a bit more elegant, and easier to work with, IMO

    You could make tree ornaments!

I would get a small shallow dish (3" diameter) (<1/2 inch deep) and place them in the dish in a powder room with a few drops of scented oil. Keep them till you tire of them and then throw them away.

@martinca_gw sunset zone 24, I once bought a dress like that, floor length, black, for my DD for a concert performance. In fact, i bought two, by accident, and the second was not returnable. I posted it here and send it to Jojo!

    @Sueb20 i think I will do that!

I can't think of anything but have to say they are such pretty dried flowers!

@Sueb20; does one glue them to the glass? Or modge podge or something?

Reminds me of when I was a young gal, I pressed some branches of lavender between paper towels in a book with the hopes of making a pressed flower arrangement as wall art in the future. Decades later and I was moving the books and opened one and there they were. Couldn't really miss them as the fragrance from the lavender was still quite strong.

I don't recall if this was Martha project, but definitely saw on TV. I pressed ferns, then placed between two pieces of glass. I used thin copper tape across the joint, folding down onto the front and back of the glass pieces. I leaned them on a off white bookcase shelves. The ferns eventually lost their color.

Back in the 70s, my mother and grandmother pressed Black-eyed Susans, glued on an old piece of wood, then brushed some sort of clear, shiny product that allowed them keep their color. Mom even used our old tree swing seat for one. Knowing my sister, you'd think she would still have one, but neither of us do. They did not make very many, and I wish I had kept one.

Mtn, I am not sure if you’d need any glue if you’re putting them between glass. Or maybe just a dot?

Target has little ornament frames for $5. I bought one yesterday to try something.

Another option! Put them in a ball!

Keep them in there for someone else to find in the future. My mom has a cookbook with a picture of me in my 6 year old Sunday school classroom. We come across it once every few years. It is fun.

Replace the background with a solid color, like black. I tried, but my ipad doesn’t have a paint app.

That looks so pretty! Sounds easy to do also.

This is so cool! Thanks for sharing that site, Mtn. I am not going to get anything done today.

LOL, my DD turned me onto it a year or so ago. SO easy to use. And unlike most tools, I have never felt the need to upgrade to a paid version.

Did not see your glue question before my last post, but I did not use glue between glass.

I sometimes press flowers for brides and other special occasions. Those hydrangeas will keep their current color by now. Blues always stay well in dried florals.

The black background reminds me of a bride about 10 years ago who carried an all-white bouquet of roses, hydrangeas, baby's breath, etc. I deconstructed her bouquet, dried each flower, and mounted on black background with gold frames, about 6 or 8, if I recall, and she hung them gallery style. Whites always dry to muted browns/beiges, and on black were really stunning as a collection.

I made a b’day card for a friend today. It can be her decision about when to toss it.🙂

What talent! It’s beautiful. She is going to love it.

thanks, nj, but if she does like it, what’s she gonna do with it— I’ll feel responsible if she feels compelled to keep it. maybe I’ll tuck a cinnamon stick inside and suggest ceremonial burning
