Moses, I think you take after your namesake very well. I think of you as a wise man.

As far as wisdom goes, I will tell you that regarding roses, I had the best possible mentor in roses, a man who was a rosarian's rosarian. His immense rose knowledge and wisdom, he shared with me liberally. He was the Chief Rosarian of the large public rose garden I refer to frequently. Gone(d.), since the mid-1990's, I remember him not only as a consummate rosarian, eager to share everything he knew, but as a kind, gentle, and generous human being.

I knew a wise rose man....what a privilege and honor!

RdR and JC are different in appearance, and you might much prefer one to the other just on that basis. One thing, in my garden, at least, 'Rose de Rescht' is as tough a rose as they come, taking drought, shade, very heavy soil in stride. It has an upright habit and grows fine on its own roots, suckering out slowly but not taking over the garden. It's thorny.

I grow both and they're both floriferous and relatively disease free for me (England). I much prefer the fragrance of JC though, its one of my top favourites and i've grown quite a few roses renowned for their fragrance

Rose de Rescht did well for me in California and for a while it was one of my favorites. Its suckering habit eventually made me change my mind. Other than that, nice rose. Maybe grafted? Or situated in a very informal garden where it is permitted to spread as it likes?

I planted Jacques Cartier twice, about a decade apart. I had actually forgotten how miserable it was in my soil the first time. I'm sad to report it was no better the second time. However, it can be lovely in the right place. Eventually I put it down as one of the roses that hates alkaline soil. It certainly is not the only one.
