Hello fellow rosarians, looking for single petaled rose(s) that sucker and rebloom. Not looking for Rugosas either!

    Ian,

I think you're asking for a high maintenance rose.

Most singles are strong hip makers, and even if they are repeat bloomers, unless the hips are removed (essentially, the blooms are deadheaded when spent, to keep flowering going), you will be spending much time deadheading. What's worse, if the rose is short of stature and profuse blooming, your back will tell you quickly that it is not happy about the deep bending.

Suckering means the rose will constantly be growing into its neighbors. Air circulation can be cut short with the density of the growth, encouraging disease outbreaks.

Think long and hard about growing single roses that go to hips, and that also sucker....unless you have a wild spot to populate, and then essentially leave to its own devices.

    Moses.

Darlow’s Enigma is a reblooming single rose and while it does not sucker, it roots so easily that a cane in contact with the ground will naturally produce offspring.

Dainty Bess is a continuous bloomer for me, and old single from the 1920s, but she does no suckering. Another great single for me is Morden Sunrise, which produces the most hips of any rose I grow. MS is a true continuous bloomer and is heading for seven months of blooming nonstop at the end of November. It started blooming May 1 (date stamp on photo), but may have been blooming in late April when I wasn't paying attention. This rose was bred in Canada and is very cold hardy. No maintenance whatsoever. I don't even prune Morden Sunrise, and it keeps a very nice shape, though it's about 8 feet tall now. You could prune it back, of course. Diane

Well, phooey. I can't find my photos of the entire rose plant. Maybe later.

Flower Girl from Fryer. Not a rampant suckering type but does send out a few.

    R. Fedtschenkoana suckers WILDLY unless grown in heavy clay and it "repeats" off and on all summer.

Ian, just curious - why do you want a rose that suckers - are you trying to cover a hillside or other large space?

Ian, I was curious about the same thing as Jackie. I don’t know about suckering, but some of the single or semi-double hybrid musks can grow wide and sprawling and also give you the repeat flowering your are after. I don’t know much about your specific climate though, the couple of HM’s I’ve tried suffered too much in my extreme summer heat.
