Please post a picture of your counters, the floor, and your current cabinets.

Here is my current kitchen.

I would change out the counters to something off-white/cream before I considered painting the stained cabinets.

Then do a tile backsplash in the same tones as the new counter.

Add under cabinet lights.

Get rid of the gray wall color.

Having the cabinets painted professionally, by a cabinet finisher, would be more expensive than changing out the darker muddy colored counters. Find a warm white for counters. Leave the wood cabinets alone. Add under cabinet lighting, and better ambient room lighting with recessed. New splash. Done.

The cabinets and floors are the best part about the room.

Thanks for the comments. Would painting just the uppers be workable. It’s far too dark. We have thought about replacing the counters but huge waste of natural stone. We have under cabinet lights and are adding a backsplash subway tile and changing wall colour plus new pendant lights.

Dark is cured by LIGHT. Not paint. Your lighting is bad. You can’t even see the colors accurately because of the bad lighting. You need recessed lights positioned go wash down the front of the wall cabinets, and put light onto the counter. And under cabinet lighting. Even more than that. A better more lumens pendant over the sink, etc. Not the too busy and too dim mini pendants.

A white room without the right lighting will still be a dark room. White paint does not manufacturer it’s own inner glow like a firefly. You need a good electrician, and a lighting designer. The lighting that you do have, is positioned incorrectly, or is the wrong type. That can be fixed, and should be fixed, before you plan any more changes.

But, absolutely, unequivocally, change out the ugly brown counters no matter what.
