I would think a hard flooring would be better in case somebody needs to use it in a wheelchair or with a walker. I had contractors match hardwood flooring from the house inside my elevator. It looks good.

Do wet shoes or spills create a problem to clean on hardwood?

They haven't for me. I have a factory finished Bruce hardwood that is holding up

well. The townhome is 5 years old. There is some light scratching in the elevator from when my daughter was home a few months ago and we moved a very large cedar chest to her car. We should have put something down to protect the floor.

The issue for an elevator is the thickness, and how it's calibrated for the stopping height. If you change the thickness of your flooring, you will need a service call to recalibrate based on the new flooring thickness.
